My son was born at exactly 33 weeks and is now 4 1/2 months old. When I read about the stuff he should be doing for his adjusted age he seems way ahead of that but when I read about what a typical 4 1/2 month old baby is doing he's just starting to get there. I was chatting with a co-worker the other day who has a (full-term) baby that's just 3 weeks younger than my son and our babies seem to be doing the exact same things. Also at my son's 4 month check-up the dr said he's doing almost everything a normal 4 month old baby should. I've always heard that it takes preemies 2-3 years to catch up but my son seems to be catching up a lot faster than that. I'm wondering what other people's experiences have been?
Re: Developmental milestones - what age to follow?
Catch-up time can vary depending on the child and how early they were. DD was a micropreemie and took the full 2 years to catch up in some areas, but caught up sooner than that in others.
Also keep in mind that the milestones have age ranges for a reason. Don't be surprised if he hits some milestones seemingly early and other milestones seemingly late.
I agree with PPs. It depends on how early they were born, you should take into consideration that milestones have age ranges, and you should go with adjusted age for milestones (and consider it a bonus if a milestone is met early).
My DS was born at 33 weeks 6 days. He seems to be pretty on track for most things that a typical 4 month old would be, I think. But I am mostly thinking about his adjusted age when considering milestones, so I don't give much thought to his actual age, other than when we are at the pedi's and they are asking about 4 month milestones, for example. Then, I realize he is meeting most, at this point.
