Unknown cause of excessive crankiness

Took DD to the doctor today thinking she had another ear infection.  You lay her down she cries...pick her up or allow her to be upright to eat or play and she is just fine.  As it turns out, her ears are fine.  HE said her gums looked puffy but to me they look fine.  She breaks down and cries for seemingly no reason....and FORGET A NAP.  She usually naps 2x a day and is down for bed at 7pm.  None of that is happening and she is fitful or screaming at some point in the night....  Even on Ibuprofen today she was still screaming when I put her down even though she was EXHAUSTED.  She is typically a GREAT sleeper.  What is this??  I am pregnant and doing this by myself right now so I'm really struggling here not getting any sleep or rest or time to get the house clean.  She won't let me out of her sight.  She screamed in her crib while I hurried to get a shower today.  Ugh....tell me it's okay. :(

Re: Unknown cause of excessive crankiness

  • DS is generally a very happy child with great sleep habits.  When he has unexplained crankiness and crying at night it's generally from teething.  If ibuprofen didn't work you could try Tylenol.  And maybe try giving her something cold to chew on.   GL and hang in there, it will get better!

  • DD has been doing this all week. I thought it might be her ears (she does have an ear infection), but now I'm thinking it might be teething as well.

  • I don't have a whole lot of advice other than to say we are in the same boat. DS is a cranky mess lately and has been waking multiple times a night screaming/crying. He had been STTN pretty well for a while. Tried some Motrin tonight and I hope it will help.

GL and hope things improve soon!

  • Sounds like teething to me.  Have you rubbed her gums?  Giving her gums a good rub can help to relieve some of the pain for her.  Also, give her frozen things (green beans are a good one to try, plus they're usually long enough for her to hold) to chew on.  They'll get her gums cold and help with the pain.  On extreme days, I'll also break out the real Orajel; I just use it sparingly and carefully.  I use it as a last resort when nothing else is working.  Unfortunately, the homeopathic and naturals products don't do squat for my kid.

  • Well thanks for the info....it seems *slightly* better this morning but who knows what the day holds.  I can't really let her cry for long at all since she throws up everything.  You know what that means....wash and change sheets, wash and change her....craziness.

  • My money is on teething. DD is a very sweet baby, but has the temper of a little demon and acts like a lunatic when she is teething. I remember having my braces and teeth adjusted and that was miserable. I knew what was going on, but these little babies (especially with the molars) have no clue. All they know is that it hurts and their whole head is throbbing.

I'd be a cranky little weirdo too. Hang in there! DD has been getting two molars and my husband is on a business trip for some time. I'm right there with you being pregnant.

As far as the cleaning goes, do you have a baby proofed room you can stick the baby gate in the door way? On days that DD is just fit to be tied and is upset about anything/everything. I put her in her play room with a bunch of toys and some music on while I clean as much as possible. She can see and hear me, and that allows me to get some basics done. Its tough. I know.

  • Honestly, what you are describing sounds like my DD when she is just about to get a tooth. She gets SUPER clingy...has to be held by mommy! Suddenly, my DD who slept through the night from 1.5 months old is waking up multiple times. And she cries over every little thing.

It will pass. My DD does best on Ibuprofen and those Hyland's teething tabs. I don't know if your little one will chew on anything, but a frozen banana usually helps. Or if she likes those teething rings that you can put in the fridge.

The crying and clinging are enough to drive you crazy, but it does pass and they go back to their normal self after those stupid teeth break through.

Best of luck to you. And remember...it is okay to put them someplace safe (like their crib) and let them cry so you can take a moment for yourself to shower or even just collect yourself when you are getting frustrated.
