XP milk supply

So I have had a pretty good supply to this point getting about 4oz per pump session every 2 to 3 hours.

My question is all of a sudden starting yesterday I am doing good to get 1 to 2 oz per session and sometimes not even enough count. Like I have no firmness to my breast anymore. I cannot nurse them right now due to them having horrible thrush causing major latch issues.

I haven changed anything. I am eating 3 solid meals and good snacks at every pump plus downing water.

Any suggestions?

Re: XP milk supply

  • I just lost the firmness this week, but I have found that it seems to be because the tissue has grown to accommodate the milk, so it's not feeling as taut when they're full.

I start my PISA on the fastest speed but the lowest suction, and run it that way for the first 2-5 minutes until I start getting a steady stream. Then I turn up the suction about half way and run it that way for another 5-10 minutes, and finish up by pumping with it on full suction/full speed for about 5 minutes while pressing the sides/tops of my breasts to empty them. I didn't have to use my hands as much when my breast tissue was still tight, probably because there was a lot of pressure being created just by the milk to boob ratio. But as long as I use pressure from my hands, I still get about the same volume I got last week. If I don't do the pressure, I stop having good let down after about a half to a third of my normal volume.

  • Thanks I will try adjust the pressure as I pump. It's just frustrating as we were mostly feeding breast milk and now I have run out of stored milk and am having to feed almost all formula.

  • I know it sucks :( Just remember you're doing your best and giving them what you can. The cost of formula can be a pain in the ass, but they're going to grow and thrive regardless. I've never had any success with using supplements or food to increase supply, but I know there are a few things doctors can prescribe to help if it gets really bad. I hope it gets better for you guys!

  • Also, I know it could just be all in my head... but I've gone out and had a drink about three times since the boys arrived - I pumped before I left for the meal/bar each time, then waited 3hrs to pump - all three nights I had about 4oz more milk than my other nights. I don't want to drink alcohol every night and it could all be completely coincidental - but my margarita, my woodchuck cider, and my bahama mama were worth it either way LOL

  • I've tried Fenugreek 3/3 xs a day as recommended by my doctor. That worked for a little while. When I started having issues again she prescribed me reglan. It worked miracles on production but I had to quit taking due to it causing me anxiety and ppd. I hated the way it made me feel mentally but not everyone experiences that. I've accepted the fact that I'm doing the best I can and 1 oz of bm is 1 oz of formula I don't have to give them.

  • Power pump! It can be hard to maintain the same supply when pumping. Basically you pump for 10, rest for 10 3x so for an hour. Once a day usually helps increase supply. Also oatmeal with flax is good and I drink mothers milk tea daily. If your supply is lowering, you need to fix something, and I haven't ever had success just adjusting the pump stuff. I EPd with my first for 10 months so it was good training for my inadvertent EPing with the twins!

Power pumping really helped reestablish and increase my supply!
