She screams through her feeds

About a week ago my 12 week old DD started to just scream with every bottle. Right when the colic starts to subside, we get this new gift. I know she's hungry because its time for her to eat, and she gets fussy. But the second I put the bottle in her mouth she starts to scream. It's not too hot or too cold, it's exactly the same as it has been for the last 12 weeks. She got a bit of reflux, but it hasn't seemed to bother her too much. I try to keep her as upright as possible but she still screams. When I take the bottle out, she stops crying but continues to fuss because she's hungry. She's getting bottles of breast milk with gas dops, like always. But now she's just crying all the time because she's hungry but refuses to eat. I don't know what else to do, help

  • Are you sure the nipples not clogged? I've had that happen before and poor LO wasn't getting any milk

  • How long has she been fussy and having reflux issues?  My son started acting this way and the doctor had us bring in a fresh diaper to test for MSPI (Milk Soy Protein Intolerance).  Sure enough, he had it.  We switched to a allergen formula while I tried the MSPI diet, but unfortunately it didn't work.  Currently he eats Enfamil Nutramagin, we put gas drops in his bottles, and he takes prevacid for reflux.  It's been 5 weeks since the diagnosis and he is soooooo much better.

  • Does she only get bottles?  Maybe her reflux has gotten worse? Or maybe she needs a faster flow of nipple?  Sorry, not much help!

  • I remember DD doing this briefly, though she was a bit younger than your LO.  Strangely playing her Sleep Sheep set to the ocean sounds helped immensely, no clue why!  Also I used to babysit for a boy who used to do this and it seemed to help if I got up and walked with him while I gave him a bottle, again, no clue why!

One more thought, have you ever tasted your pumped milk?  Maybe it's the taste?  I have lipase, which makes my milk taste like soap pretty soon after it is pumped. Or maybe something in the freezer made it smell/taste bad?

  • Maybe she needs a faster nipple flow at this point.

  • Reflux could be worse like some others mentioned.  I was reading up on this today and crying at feeding is a big indicator.  You could have silent reflux and not have a lot coming up and still have the pain.
  • Could it be teething? It hurts to suck when their gums are sore. Try rubbing her gums when she starts crying and see if that seems to calm her down.

  • I'm new here, but figured I could share my experience as well. I agree with PP, about looking into the reflux issue or possibly MSPI. Is she currently on any meds for reflux? My son is 6 weeks, and we are just now gettting the diagnosis of a MPI as well as reflux (he is currently on Zantac twice a day for that), but his symptoms were delayed onset so we really had no way of knowing until he slowly started getting fussier/crying with each feeding, arching his back, (and lastly showing signs of blood in his stool) etc.

  • This was my LO... he has MSPI, mik soy protein intolerance.  I'm BFing and had to remove all dairy and soy from my diet.   I would look into the possibility that your LO is having a hard time digesting the milk and soy proteins in your breastmilk from whatever you're eating in your diet.  Even proteins like casein, whey, etc found in breads, baked goods, etc can upset your LO.  I found these links helpful:
