Hands in mouth

So lately LO has been sucking on his hands CONSTANTLY.  I mean it's to the point he spits out the pacifier and only wants his hands. Is this a possible sign he is going to start teething and is there something maybe I should give him to slobber all over instead of his hands?

Re: Hands in mouth

  • LO is doing the exact same thing right now.  She has also been extremely hungry lately.  I'm trying to put all the pieces together--is it teething? growth spurt? time to start solids?

Try giving him a teething toy and see how it goes!

  • Loading the player...
  • Just let him go to town on his hands. But watch him good... haha Only say that because my LO has been OBESSED with her hands and yesterday in a 10 minute span she gagged herself probably 5 times! lol She is totally teething! Rosey cheeks, fussy, eating constatntly, drooling..

  • My son is 3 months today and has been doing the same exact thing! I swear he's teething although I know it's early.
  • I don't know if it is tied to teething.  I think this is just when they discover their hands, and this is the beginning of the "everything goes in my mouth" phase.  ;)

  • It is totally normal. It is one way the discover themselves. My son does this too, and he is just a week or so older than yours. He has been doing it for a while now. He just recently learned to put toys in his mouth too, which is giving his hands a small break anyway. The nice part is that sucking on his thumb is the only way he self-soothes. He rarely takes his pacifier anymore, because he loves his thumb so much. I just think it is such a normal developmental stage that I let him do it as much as he wants.

Yup, I agree with this. When DS1 went through this stage, I was certain that he was teething. Nope. Nada. He had just discovered his hands and were obsessed with them! He had all of the excessive drooling and everything. He started doing this around 4ish months but didnt cut his first tooth until 7ish months.

This. If your LO is sucking on their hands, it probably isn't teething. Nawing on their hands (like trying to "chew" or "bite" them) is probably teething.

My LO started teething at 2 months old.

  • We are also part of the mouth in hands constantly crowd. I thought teething too but H just seems to be so interested in his hands!

  • My LO too...she seems to be obsessed with her hand/fist and would even get extremely fuzzy if I try to pull it out.  Though I tend to keep them cover for bedtime. Hope it's alright.

  • My DD is doing this too. I give her a rattle or a teething ring, but she really just wants her hands. I think she just discovered them so it's novel.
