Tube helllll

Micah got his tubes today. The fasting last night was slightly more interesting due to his puke-fest after dinner. I don't know what didn't agree with him, but he was miserable. He was a doll for the pre-op stuff and surgery was quick. Double ear infection discovered during the procedure (checked a week ago and was clear).

Coming to was rough, and he screamed and thrashed for awhile. After about 20 minutes, we headed home, and he passed out. His one ear has been bleeding non-stop, and he keeps getting his finger in there and smearing blood everywhere. He's crying, tugging at his ears and just miserable. He's only calm when I get him to nap, which luckily he keeps doing. Doctor said he'd be normal in an hour and maybe take one extra nap today. He lied.

I let Micah nap on his side for a little to give my arms a break, and he woke with a pool of blood in his ear. Poor guy! And DH works the next 3 days, leaving me alone with one very needy little boy! Sorry to vent. I'm all alone here!

  • Oh gosh that sounds horrible! Poor kiddo. That doesn't sound ok though, did they give you a list of signs to watch for? I'd probably call if they didn't say those symptoms are normal.

  • Sorry to hear, Steel. I don't have any experience, but hopefully he's back to himself as soon as possible and the tubes do their job to prevent future ear infections.

They told us his ears would drain for awhile, and they "cleaned out" the infections. The worst infection is the one draining the most, which isn't surprising. The rest of his reaction isn'tmuch different than a normal ear infection though.

He just woke up happy, so I'm hoping it lasts for a little bit. His doctor will call tonight, so I'll double check that everything is fine then.

  • Oh poor thing! And you too. While DD didn't have that bad a reaction, unfortunately sometimes it can happen. It sounds like more the ear infections than the surgery, but the surgery probably didn't help.

  • Awww, so sad for all of you! What made them decide to put in tubes? (Sorry, haven't been on much!)

4 ear infections in 4 months (since I returned to work) sent us to the ENT who recommended tubes. His ears just aren't meant to drain properly.

  • Hoping he is doing better. I've heard good things about getting tubes. Hope the next three days go ok for you!

  • Thank you all for the support. He has been extra needy, but far less fussy now. Since getting the tubes, he has suddenly started some hang time after letting go of something and before falling on the ground. Now, if only he would start sleeping more!

Wow, that's tough. DD has had one double ear infection, and two nights in the hospital because of dehydration, and now has another cold and isn't eating. DH is convinced we need to take her out of daycare (MIL will watch...), but I think it's okay for LOs to be sick, and it's not just daycare babies (it doesn't help that we are both teachers and I'm sure we bring things home on our clothes and shoes, too!)
