My LO has been diagnosed with torticollis. We are waiting on the PT to call us to set up our appt for assessment. Has anyone else been through torticollis treatment? Did it resolve or is it getting better?
Is that where their head always goes to one side? My DCP brought that up this morning, I googled it and torticollis came up. He favors his left side, she told me to have him sleep on his right side and it'll fix it.
Ds had this. PT will give you stretches to do at home several times per day. The stretches do help, but for us it turned out to also be related to something else that took longer to resolve. Ds did end up with flattening of the head and needed a helmet.
DS was diagnosed at 2 weeks. We have been doing PT twice a week and its been a huge help. He has a huge knot on his right side and will not turn his head that way. We cannot use any inclined baby gear and limited use of carseat and its hard but we are seeing results.
we saw pt last month for a visit. They recomednded some little things we can do to encourage him to strech and move his head, but it was mild and thepy said he would probably grow out of it. We have a visit next week, and I have already seen imporvement.
My youngest son had torticollis. We did PT but despite that, he still definitely favored turning his head to the right. He developed a big flat spot which then made his ears uneven. We upped his tummy time by a ton and let him nap on his stomach to try and counteract the flat head but no luck. Eventually we got him a helmet which helped round out his head and the torticollis worked itself out with our continued stretching and his muscles becoming stronger.
Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
DS2 was diagnosed at his 2 checkup. PT is coming in a couple weeks but I've already started doing stretches with him which I googled and doing more tummy time and I already see an improvement.
My LO was just diagnosed with this as well at his 2 month checkup. We have an appt with a PT on Friday. I'm hoping we can get it resolved and not have to get him fitted for a helmet! He definitely has a flat side on his head.
My LO is 11 wks old, and at her 2 month appointment the dr said she saw a little bit of torticollis and to do exercises with her. if she hasn't improved enough by 4 month appointment we'll start working w/a PT. Does that seem too late to wait to work w/a PT or when did you guys start meeting w/one?
I try to get her to sleep with her head turned the other direction but she really fights it...

This exactly. The earlier you catch it the easier it is to work out. Until you start PT just try to constantly reposition your baby, and do tummy time as much as LO will tolerate. It was devastating to me at first, but my neurologist helped put things into perspective when he said "it's like a beautiful car that has a small ding... It's still beautiful, all the parts are there and everything runs fine." There are way worse things to face. Personally I would stay away from a chiropractor because it could actually cause more harm than good to the muscles and nerves, especially if they aren't familiar with torticollis. If it ends up LO has plageo too... Cranial sacral therapy is helpful, but again, the person needs to be certified and well educated in pedi and the diagnosis. GL!
How old is your LO? There is a product called Tortle which helps prevent Torticollis and flat head syndrome in infants up to 6 months. It's also used to treat some cases. It's a beanie cap with a soft positional roll on the back which you're able to alternate from side to side. This helps the baby strengthen the neck muscles. I would check it out if you're interested in exploring some options. It was actually created by a pediatrician and mother of four! It's only around $20 on www.tortle.com.
Re: Torticollis anyone?
I agree! Or at least consult with one and see if this is something they work on.
