BFing #2

Brightside, Ali&dan, Vnstacie-

My experience BFing my second baby was completely different than my first. I BF L for a month and pumped but not enough, so I supplemented with formula when I went back to work and then completely switched to formula shortly after. I was crushed. I remember sobbing to the pedi, knowing it was ok, but needing to hear it from a professional that formula was ok,

the second time around, I knew much more than I did before, and I thought I was informed the first time. I was more determined, I was experienced, and my baby was a different person. And here we are, 16 months later, still nursing.

the number one lesson I learned, was that my children are completely different, from the start. I was a success and something I couldn't do with L, and a failure at getting the same results in other areas.

so, my unsolicited advice for the evening, maybe it works, and maybe it doesn't. Just know that it will be different than before.

Re: BFing #2

  • Yes!

BFing A is sooooo different. I think it's because of how the hospital handled it. With O they took her for hours before I was able to feed her. H had to call and tell the nurse to bring her to us.

With A they gave him to me to feed right after they got him breathing, BF has been way easier this time.

I haven't supplemented with A, and I had to  with O. So hopefully I can EBF A for atleast a year.

  • I'm so nervous!  My experience with L was honestly wonderful.  I'm so scared it won't work this time.

  • Idcoffel, thanks for this!  We're not even trying yet, but I think about this so often.  I wanted to BF with B so badly and was seriously depressed when it wasn't working.  I'm scared about the next one, but cautiously hopeful too.

  • Thanks for posting this. I am doing my best to remind myself that just because I had a not so great experience with bf'ing the first time, doesn't mean it will happen again.

Looking forward to a better experience with # 2 also.  D wouldn't latch so we pumped and then when she did latch at 8 weeks I was already back to work.  My supply was never great and we had to supplement.  I through in the towel at 4mths but she got breast milk from freezer stash till she was 6mths old.  Hoping to make a year with baby #2.

  • My experience wasn't that bad. I went to a little class once and I read and read every article I could amd whrn I had Matt the nurse that brough him helped. My mom helped me the firts night because of the c/s but in the morning I was holding him and trying, but dayd later I noticed that Matt wasn't latching well to my right boob cuz it started hurting and it even bled. Damn did I cried everytime I have to nursed him from that one. So I started pumping from that one only to give it time to heal. Eventualy it got easier and I kind it like it. I even learned how to eat pizza while nursing Matt hahahahaha. Matt weaned himself at seven months [I was supplementing by this time] because he just stopped liking the boob. He gagged the last time I tried. Which is curious because now he tries to play with them and have even tried to bite me a couple of times  but I did my goal, I wanted to exclusively nurse for 6 months and I did :]

  • Thanks for posting this. My issues with B didn't start so much until I went back to work. She developed a major bottle preference and I could barely pump anything, so I had to supplement pretty early on. I would seriously lock myself in my office for hours every day pumping and pumping and pumping to bring home maybe 8 or 9 ounces a day. It was so frustrating.

  • I  probably needed to hear this.

I had a great experience nursing Augie.  I can't wait to nurse #2.  When pregnant with Augie my plan was - I want to bf but if it doesn't work, oh well.  I wasn't passionate about it.  But then it was wonderful and I loved it and became quite passionate about it.  I'm not doing a very good job mentally preparing myself for the chance it doesn't work with #2.

  • I'm hoping for an easier time this time. It was hard with DD especially in the beginning but I stuck with it even though neither of us seemed to be the biggest fans. She weaned herself at 12.5m. I wanted to make it to 2yrs. Maybe this time. TFS!
