Vomiting/Reflux question

Alright, LO has reflux. His doctor has him on rice cereal. We do not put it in his bottle, we spoon feed it to him. Since he has started the cereal, we have seen a big difference. He's a much happier baby. Now, the past 2 days..we have noticed he is spitting up alot more, which I figured was normal with being 3 months. But he has also been vomiting after he's been eating his cereal. Not just a little spit up, but projectile vomiting all over the place. The poor thing gets so scared after this happens. My sister watched him yesterday and he did the same thing for her. This is only after he's been eating his cereal. This has never been an issue before. I'm a little concerned. I'm going to call his pedi to see what they suggest. Didn't know if you ladies had any thoughts or experiences you'd like to share?

Re: Vomiting/Reflux question

  • I don't have any help for you but I'd definitely call the pedi! I'm sure it's nothing but since it's out of the norm it's good to check!

  • A few things:

Why are you spoon feeding? On doctor's recommendation? I don't understand this, because the whole purpose of rice cereal is to keep the contents of a bottle from coming back up. So you should mix it with the bottle..

How much cereal are you giving him? Some babies do good with 1 ts per oz or 1 tbs per 2-3 oz bottle. Some babies, like Z, have to have 1 tbsp per oz. Keep in touch with your pedi, you might need to re-examine the treatment.

Is he also on meds? Plain cereal didn't work for us, and we had to be put on meds. Another thing to discuss with pedi.

Is he burping after he eats? Are you holding him upright for 30 minutes after he eats? These things are pretty key to having a non-throwing up baby.

And if that doesn't work, you may need to see a GI doctor.

Z has a severe milk allergy and severe reflux. We've seen many doctors and even been to the hospital for his issues. But for us, Zantac 15 mL 3x a day, 1 tbsp of OATMEAL cereal (rice cereal can upset their tummies too) per oz of formula, a specialized formula called Neocate, holding upright for 45 minutes, constant burping have helping. He still throws up about once a day though, projectile style, which they say he will "grow out of". It looks worse than it is.. good luck. :)

Edit: 15 mL broken up 3 times a day, not 15mL 3x a day.. egads.
