Baby Names

Alright, top three girl names

DH and I have been stuck on the same three girls names forever and have gone back and forth between them. Just wondering what the board's opinions are.

- Charlotte. I know, it's overused and a bit boring, but DH is really pushing for this one. I do like it because it's classic and feminine. I see it a lot on the board but it's not really popular in my area (believe me, I've looked at the hospital baby website quite a bit).

- Alexandra. Again, classic and feminine but we'd almost definitely have to have a nickname since it's a bit "bulky". I like Allie and don't mind Alex. I guess I'm a bit concerned about the whole "Lexi" trend but that seems to be lessening perhaps? (and I hate the nn Lexi, btw)

- Colette. I love this one but it's a bit of a bold choice for us. I think it's a gorgeous name but for some reason I can't see actually naming my DD this, if that makes any sense.

MN's are up in the air. Maybe some sort of combination (Colette Alexandra or Alexandra Colette. I don't think Charlotte works with any of the others). I think we need to focus on picking a first name and then we'll work on a MN.

Ok, give it to me straight! Thanks!

  • All three are good picks. I like them in this order: Colette, Charlotte, Alexandra

  • I love Alexandra but I agree that it is a long name.  I love Charlotte, probably because I know a little girl with that name and she is just too cute!  Not a big fan of Colette.

  • I think Charlotte Alexandra is cute.

I don't like Colette at all. I always say it with a heavy Cajun accent since I know so many people with that name.

  • I like Charlotte and Alexandra best. Charlotte would be on my list if DH like it, but Alexandra seems refreshing to me. You might also get a nn out of the ending if you want other options...Andi, maybe?

If you really hate Lexi, though, I would skip Alexandra. You can control the nn used for awhile, but she might pick something different later.

Colette isn't awful, but I'm not a big fan.

  • I like Charlotte.  It's not popular in my area at all.  I actually don't know anyone IRL named this.  It's beautiful and classic.

I agree with you that Alexandra is bulky.  Probably why I've never been a fan of it.  I could get behind Charlotte Alexandra though.  That's really pretty.

Colette is just okay for me.  I could never see myself naming my child this, but I don't dislike it.

I thought naming my daughter, Esme was bold, but it felt so right! It was a name that I loved the sound of, it felt spunky but feminine, just like how my daughter is today. If you like a name, (and its a real name) don't be afraid of it! Embrace it!

This is my DD's name. They are both family names.

OP, Colwtte was also on our list. It's less popular, but gorgeous nonetheless. You can't go wrong.

All good but Alexandra is my favorite.

My friend Alexandra goes by Alexandra, Alex, or Zandra.  Never Lexi.

I was going to mention this too. All of the Alexandra's I know mostly use the full name or go by Alex. I don't find it lends itelf to the nn Lexi unless the family chooses to use that as the nn right from the start.

ETA: That beign said, my choices would be Alexandra, Charlotte, Colette. Being Canadian, I find Colette to be very French and would only use it if I was more bilingual/French.

  • Personally, I would go with Alexandra Colette. Though it's a beautiful name, I'm over Charlotte right now. Colette is gorgeous but it sounds like you're not totally feeling this as your LO's FN. I wouldn't worry about the NN. If you start calling her Allie or Alex, I don't think Lexi will ever be an issue.

  • Fave: Colette.

Next: Alexandra, but have a NN plan since you'll need one.

    Charlotte is NMS.

  • I like Charlotte the best.  Alexandra and Colette are not bad, but I prefer Cosette to Colette.

I like all three names, and I would rank them in the order you listed them. If Alexandra seems too long, would you consider Alexa instead? Just a thought. The neighbor girl next door is named Alexandra and absolutely everyone calls her Alex.

  • I really like Colette the best, but if it doesn't feel like it "fits," then you should probably veto it.

Charlotte may not seem popular in your area, but I really think this is destined to be a top 10 name, so it's just going to keep going up.  If you're okay with that though, then you should pick that one.
