Fifths Disease

I know another poster posted on this the other day. I too have a student now with Fifths. Its an awkward situation as its a close family friend and their child. She is panicking and is continually apologizing despite my repeated.."it's not your fault! It would have been any of these kids!"

Got the blood work this afternoon and am now waiting. Hoping for results tomorrow, but I'm afraid it won't be given until Monday! :( Oh why did this have to fall at the weekend! I did the research, so I know the risks and I know they say it big but not huge...doesn't help! Thoughts and prayers that I have patients and am immune would be greatly appreciated!

  • I'm sure you're immune, I wouldn't worry.

  • I know it's scary!  Lots of T&Ps your way, but if you've been teaching for awhile, it's very likely you're immune and if you're not, the risk to the fetus is still small (though scary, I know!).

  • That was me that posted! I too am a teacher and was told you are likely already immune. You only need to be notified of a child with fifths if you are pregnant so you were likely already exposed without knowing it. My bloodwork isn't back yet but my doctor said my baby's heartbeat was very strong yesterday in the ultrasound so miscarriage due to fifths in the first trimester should not be an issue. She said depending on the results they may re test me later since anemia can develop later on. However, if you are immune, which you probably are as a teacher, you shouldn't worry! Just ask your doctor about it and get the bloodwork done.
