Multiples

Yet another comment!

I think we could all write a book on things not to say to a MoM! I was speaking with an acquaintance yesterday whom I don't see regularly. It was her first time meeting them so she was asking a lot of questions about them. She asked how much they weighed at birth and I told her they were 6 9 and 7 1 which is great for twins. Then she replied, "Oh they were tiny!" And told me about her 10 pound baby. I know she wasn't being facetious but I was rubbed the wrong way! They didn't feel "tiny" when I was carrying close to 14 pounds and 40 inches of baby, plus two placentas and fluid!

Re: Yet another comment!

  • My sister takes a different approach by constantly reminding me my twins together already weigh more than her singleton.  But then she throws in the pleasant "and I only gained 24 pounds and was 10 pounds under my pre-pregnancy weight at six months.  Isn't that crazy?  How long do you think it'll take you to lose those 45-50 pounds?"  She's lucky she lives 800 miles away.

  • FWIW, my dd was 6 lbs 2 oz and was full term. She was totally healthy. People are dumb and frankly babies shouldn't be giants, they're babies!

  • Ugh! That makes me mad. Those are fantastic weights for twins! Also, amen to your comment about 14 pounds of baby, two placentas etc. People just don't get it. I was measuring 50 "weeks" when my babies were born and people still comment on how tiny my daughter is. No matter that she's in the 50th percentile. Oh well. I suppose that having to put up with ignorant comments is a reasonable trade off for the amazing experience of having multiples!

I had a new coworker offer me his condolences yesterday when I told him I had 9 month old twins.  Effin jack@ss.

My youngest brother was an 11lb baby ridiculous I know. My mother bless her heart loved to throw that one back at me every time I mentioned the babies' weights after an ultrasound. She eventually stopped, because I beat her with the final weights, but it made me tune her out.My grandmother liked to compare their weights to hernbsp;Yorkshirenbsp;terrier. "Oh it's like two of these!"No.nbsp; nbsp;[/

Haha!! I'm cracking up at your gma!

  • Ha... um yeah you had some awesome weights on your twins, what is she talking about?  Some people just don't know what to say so they try to "compare" or one up you.  Yeah I'm sure carrying and birthing a 10 lber is challenging but does not equal twins.  When I was pregnant I had a co-worker tell me her pregnancy with her 10 lb son was "just like carrying twins".  Yeah right lady...  I definitely told her otherwise.
  • I will never understand why ppl are so proud of having a huge baby. My first was 8' 11 and my second was 7' 2. The 7'2 was so much easy to deliver.

    Your twins weight were awesome!!
  • First, you are a rock star for carrying your twins to such healthy weights! I will be thrilled if I can do that! Just because your babies weren't giants like hers was doesn't mean they are "tiny." Your babies were almost average weight for singletons! I cannot imagine carrying all that baby around. Hopefully I will find out soon though. ;)

  • My singletons were 6lb5oz and 6lb11oz respectively. Healthy for a baby and I always called them my little peanuts. I am praying I can make it to the 37ish week mark and the twins come out a goood weight and healthy. I would have "poolitely" said, "10 pounds? thats huge for a singleton!" and walked away. But I can be a little tit for tat sometimes. :)
  • I swear, the next time someone brags about their giant 10 lb baby, I'm going to say, "Wow, your vagina must be totally shot."

LOL!  I needed that chuckle this morning :)

  • To me anything under than 7lbs *is* tiny for a newborn.  DS1 was 8 lb 4 oz and DS2 was 7 lb 14 oz and were thought the were so little!  I get that with twins it's different as an overall weight thing, but generally speaking I don't think people are referring to placentas and all that.  And clearly there's no way these babies are going to be as big as my singletons were, so I already keep talking about how itty bitty they are going to be.

FWIW I think I offended a lady the other day when I met her 1 week old.  He was 10 lb at birth and I was like "Oh he's so cute and little!"  She made some comment about how he actually isn't little, but come on lady, I'm sitting here with an almost 4 year old and an 18 month old.  Your newborn is small in comparison.

Hahaha!!! I get that response too. Mine were 7lb2oz and 7lb10oz. No one dares compare my pregnancy to theirs. I win.

My twins were 4 pounds and 3 pounds 8 ounces.  I'll never forget, they were about 2ish months old when they were baptized.  My cousin was overdue with her son and he was only a week or so old; we were due within weeks of each other. My family had a picture taken with her son and my two.  He was an almost 10 pound baby and mine were still not that weight yet.  SHE made comments about how her vaj was shot. :P

  • Yeah, mine were 6.10 and 6.7 and I feel the same way. I have totally pointed out before the total. Adding up all the "extras" (second placenta and second bag of amniotic fluid) it was like 16 lbs and 39.75" of baby for me.

I also had a friend say something about how big her newborns have been and she said, "I know people who have had twins and their babies put together weren't as big as one of mine!" Totally rubbed me the wrong way but I didn't say anything.

  • A singleton could weigh more than a set of twins combined, but it won't be as long. Mine were about 11 1/2 lbs combined but length? 38 inches of baby. More length than one of my two year olds. So...yeah, totally not the same.
