Success after IF

If you could plan the spacing of your kids...

So if you didn't have IF and could actually exert some sort of control over the time/spacing between your children, what would be the ideal amount of time between your kids?

IF DX: DOR & Fragile X pre-mutation carrier

Re: If you could plan the spacing of your kids...

  • I actually like a two year separation, and somehow we are pretty close to that. DS will (hopefully) be two years and 3.5 months when the twins come.

After two Clomid cycles, three injectable IUI cycles, two IVFs, two miscarriages, and one lap surgery, IVF #2 has brought us our little boy!

  • I agree with pp. 2 yrs would be perfect for us. 1 child semi functional and independent but not too far out from having an infant that you forget it all. It was only a yr and a half ago but I'm already forgetting what it's like to have a baby and not a toddler!

  • From a functional standpoint, it would be great to do 3 years so I could have a "helper", but 2 years or less makes for better friends and playmates. I think I would go for two years.

  • I would have preferred 3-4 year age difference, but alas we actually were lucky enough to get a surprise BFP so 20-21 months is what we'll have!

  • I really enjoyed the two and a half year separation between my first and second and second and third.  This two under two thing is a bit harder.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • ideally 2 years. it allows me to return from maternity leave and still work enough to afford another maternity leave.

Although I imagine we'll probably start trying again when Hannah is 9-10 months old cuz we're getting older and we don't want to wait too long.

  • I think three years. I'm not sure why. I guess 2u2 scares me a bit because my husband works long days, often times on the weekends so I'm with DS a lot (and he comes to work with me).

  • I have always thought 2 years would be great. My sister and I were 3 years apart and I always wished we were a little closer in age -- especially during the middle school/high school years. Incredibly, we may get just that! DD will be 2 years and 3 months when this LO comes along!

  • Right about 2 years.  We started cycling for #2 with the just under 2 years apart timeframe in mind, and ended up with just over 2 years apart.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • If I could have planned things the way I used to envision them I would have three kids, all 2 years apart.

But, with that said, my first two are 15 months apart and I wouldn't have it any other way.  Maybe it's because I don't know anything different, but I'm totally okay with the spacing between the two.

I know I'm a little crazy, but I'll take what I can get, when I can get it!  I never went back on bc and am praying for another miracle.  With my DOR dx we are hoping to do IUI again when our youngest is 10 months old.  We'll see what happens!

  • I think I would want 2 years also.  My brother and I are 2 years apart, and it's close enough that we are close now, but far enough that we had space in school.  I have no clue what we will end up with, if we even are blessed with a second at all.

  • Lo's are 4 years almost exactly apart and it's been great. Ds1 is such a good helper and can entertain himself if needed. I wouldn't want any further apart and were planning on doing our FET in November/December which would be 2u2! So we will see what that's like hopefully!!

  • We started TTC2 when DD was 6 months. There will be 17 months between 1and 2. I am still a little scared. Assuming I don't change my mind after 2 gets here, we plan on TTC 3 when 2 is 13 months old.

  • Back when we starting TTC, I imagined that I would get pg at 29 and then have one more 3-4 years later. My sisters and I are all 4 years apart which was nice for my parents when it came to dealing with college costs. But it probably works better in reality to have babies closer in age, because my DH stays home with LO during the day and this way he will be able to work days again sooner. If FET works we will have them exactly 2.5 years apart, which would be great. 2U2 wouldn't have worked for me since I just started a new job a year ago.

  • Two to three years would have been great.  Having your kids close together doesn't always mean that they will be close & get along though, my sister & I were just over two years apart & we fought a lot growing up.  Thankfully, as adults we are closer.

  • In an ideal world we will do our first FET when DS is 18 or 19 months old. He would be 2 years 4 months when baby is born.

I like the space plus baby would be born in February and I would take the rest of the school year off.

In a perfect world of course...

  • For me it would be 3 years.  But then again, I should have started having babies 4 years ago and would have had time to get 2, maybe 3, kids in before I turned 35.  Now I think we'll just have 2 and we'll probably start trying later this summer, so our kids would be about 2.5 years apart.

I was just thinking today how I am not looking forward to potty training DS2 in public restrooms while having to cart around a baby. Wonder how helpful DS1 will be in assisting? A girl can dream, right?

  • I don't really know.  My sister and I are 4 years and then her and my brother are 5 years apart.  It is so much that we never had much in common as kids.  So I wanted our kids to be much closer.  I guess I had kind of thought maybe 2-ish years.  But now having nursed a child to 2, and been pregnant before, and now being pregnant with M/S, I don't think I would much have liked tandem nursing.  And I also would have been sad if my supply dried up prematurely due to being pg.

Also, now actually HAVING a 2 year old, that is still very attention needy, I think having a NB right now would be very difficult.  His maturity is growing by leaps and bounds and I think 6 months from now will be worlds different than 6 months ago.

Assuming this pregnancy results in a RLB the kiddos will be 2yr10mo apart.  That seems ok.  I guess I feel less passionate about there being a "right" spacing than I did prior to having kids, if that makes sense?
