Car Seat Bunting or Footmuff

I'm a Florida native and have only lived in Chicago for the past year, so I've never really dealt with an infant in the cold. Seeking advice on whether I need something to cover my car seat for #2. What I find is these aren't safe to put on the car seat because it's added bulk around the straps and that makes sense. So is there an alternative out there that only fits over the opening of the car seat and doesn't sit under the baby and still would help keep them warm? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Car Seat Bunting or Footmuff

  • I just used a blanket.  We had a ton of them and I could remove it in the car or cover her legs with it.  Most of the time you're going to warm the car before you get in anyway.

She got way over heated with the covers that have the zipper and flap.  And I usually only had her in a warm sleeper and hat.

  • I used what the pp posted above about, however I have seen some people who have used this : https://www.amazon.com/Jolly-Jumper-Sneak--Infant-Carseat/dp/B001LPNH2G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1359427324&sr=8-3&keywords=infant+carseat+covers

and it doesn't go under the infant in the carrier, just straps onto the top.

  • Please do not get a Bundle Me!!!!! They are sooooo dangerous. They also void your car seat warranty. Anything that is like a showercap (like the Jolly Jumper one linked above) is fine. I had a similar one from the First Years. Just don't put anything behind the baby that can interfere with the straps.

Also, don't do a bulky coat! Fleece is the way to go since it won't mess up with how tight the straps are. We also used a receiving blanket to wrap around him.

Sorry that was more than you probably wanted to know, but I'm a huge advocate for car seat safety! Most aren't used correctly unfortunately. I have a lot of great info about how to properly use them on my blog (link in siggy) if anyone is interested.

We used the JJ Cole Car Seat Cover  due to the reasons that PP mentioned about voiding the warranty of the car seat and the potential of not allowing the car seat to work in it's proper fashion in case of an accident (same goes for those car seat shoulder straps you see a lot). Apparently the bundle mes, shoulder straps, etc are now aimed at being used in strollers (as opposed to car seats) but I have yet to see that actually occur in real life.

Sorry, small tangent. Anyway, we use the Car Seat Cover which like PP stretches around the seat like a shower cap. It does leave quite the space between baby & the cover itself so we usually added a blanket once we got him buckled into his seat.
