Baby Names

Random thing that makes you "unable" to use a name

So, most of us pull a name from contention if, say, a close friend names their child that, or there was a kid you hated growing up with that name, etc.

What's the most random thing/reason you have pulled a name from contention?

Mine:  DH and I *love* RuPaul's Drag Race.  Not ashamed to admit it (and you should be watching it too.)  However, it has spoiled a few names for us, because now when we think of this name or that (most recently, Serena,) we picture a fabulous man in a dress.

  • I definitely think "association" is a major factor in this.  For example, once the name is associated  with someone you dislike, it's game over.

  • I love the name lily. LOVE IT. But my sisters favorite dog in the world was named lily and she was hit and killed by a truck. She even kept her dog tag and collar. My DH and I are having a really hard time trying to come up with a girl name. None pop out like - Oh thats her name- besides lily, but we it know it would be wrong to name her that. Kinda sucks but I understand.

  • Our last name ends with -son, so any first names ending the same way are out (mason, Jackson etc)

  • I grew up on a dairy cow farm, where we registered all the cows in our herd. As part of the registration we had to name each cow. We used a baby names book for a majority of the naming so many of our cows had "people" names. I would have a hard time using any name that we have previously used for a cow (i.e. Heather, Lydia, Abby, Dana... the list goes on and on). Thank goodness I'm expecting a boy (we didn't register the bull (boy) calves). Haha

  • Starting with the letter C. Our last name starts with a C. My MIL is a C.C., DH's ex-wife is a C.C., and the child they had together is a C.C.  Now, I love my stepson to death, but my MIL and I have a rocky relationship, and the ex-wife is fine but not my favorite person. So no more C.C. babies!

This. As a teacher, a number of names get associated (either in a good or bad way) with students, or you hear a name so often you get tired of it.

We also have a very common last name that ends in -son, so that rules out a number of names for us.

Similar here. MIL & FIL names all their children with D.D. names. There are some really great D names that I love that but just can't bring myself to use because of this. H was going to be Dominic, but the older 3 didn't like it so they changed it. She still tells the story every time baby names are brought up. No way could I use that name now.

  • Timothy - ex bf

Bianca - bitchy girl from high school

Fiona - Emmy Rossum's character on Shameless

    Caroline - Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet Caroline (bah-bah-bah)

    Esme - Twilight (grrrrrrrrrrrrr)

Angelica - Rugrats (DH's reason, not mine)

  • Our last name starts with a "D" so we ruled out any names that began with a "V" (so no VD initials) and any names that began with a "D" (because DH didn't want our daughter to have the initials DD - he thought it would set her up for teasing from male classmates)

Haha, I was in 4-H and we always named our 4-H livestock animals names that would remind us of what was to come. Lamb Chop, Hamburger, Bacon, etc. Of course, you get to keep the dairy cows around for a while, our 4-H livestock were usually auctioned off at the end of the fair.

This is me! Every person in my fiance's family's name starts with a "D". This includes his granddad, his grandad's 7 brothers, my MIL, fiance and sister in law. I'm over here like, that's enough! haha.

Not to mention, after there are so many "d" names, you start to run out of good ones, and they just have these awful names just because they have to start with a "D".

  • DH ruled out a girl's name I suggested because it was the same as "an overly aggressive obese girl who had a crush on me in high schoool." Translation: his HS stalker's name.

I ruled out all "B" names b/c I didn't want to give our child the initials B.O.

  • When we found out we were pg with #1 a few years ago, we told the family, including my SIL, who was (and still is) hoping for a child. We decided we weren't sharing names with anyone, but DH and I had already fallen in love with the name Henry.

SIL was excited for us and wistfully talked about her future child, and how she has had the name Henry picked out for years.

I remember shooting a glance at DH like "Fuuuuuu....."

So, DH and I talked about it, and decided not to use the name. While we liked it, I couldn't do it to my SIL, who I love dearly. And I'm okay with that because family is more important sometimes. Int he end it's just a name and doesn't influence how you feel about your child. And hopefully one day I will have a nephew named Henry!
