Babies: 0 - 3 Months

not sure what to think of ped visit

So baby girl is now 11 weeks old - today we went for her 2 month shots (she was sick at 2 months so they were delayed).  Anyway, I told the dr that she has been able to roll/flip from tummy to back.  The dr seemed concerned and said it was too early for her to do that.  She said that she was worried about "tone" and that we should do daily stretches with the baby for flexilibity.  I was confused and frankly I still am confused.  I asked the dr why it was bad and if there were any concerns from a developmental (physical) perspective and she said no, babies are supposed to reach milestones at certain times and not too early or too late - like rolling.

My question - does this sound wacky to anyone else than myself?  Am i missing something?  This is my first and if she happened to roll then what I am going to do?  I just figured she was a strong baby!

  • Uh... my DD rolled before 3 months from tummy to back.

  • Something sounds weird, babies don't just roll over at exactly 3 months old (or whatever). Babies teeth from 2 months to over 12 months. So what makes your doctor think there is a specific time frame? Weird. I'd find a new doctor for your LO.

  • Strange. Maybe get a recommendation from some other mothers in your area for another pedi.

  • My DD isn't even 2 weeks old yet and she was trying to roll from tummy to back during tummy time today. I'm pretty sure she'll be rolling "early." This is my first too, so I don't really have any advice other than to get a second opinion, because I do think that sounds a little weird.

  • According to my mother, I could do it about the day I was born.  I have read that rolling over isn't even a milestone really considered these days b/c babies are not on their tummies as much as before.  Maybe your doctor independently noticed something about tone and wants you to do the exercises... I wouldn't leave just yet unless there are other things that sound off.
  • My pedi has a poster in her office with developmental milestones broken down by month. In bold print it says "Milestones should be considered guidelines rather than rules. All babies develop at their own pace." My husband was running--not walking, RUNNING--when he was 6 months old. DS has been able to push himself up on his elbows and hold his head up since he was a week old. Babies cannot read calendars. They do not magically hit a certain day, week, or month and be able to suddenly do a skill.

I'd shop around for another pedi.

  • Ok don't be so hard on this pedi. There can be legitimate concerns for high muscle tone which can be a sign of CP. I'm not saying that's the case here but there can be a legitimate reason to be concerned about rolling "too early". There would be other signs and things noticeable on physical exam so if that's the only thing, no big deal. But this pedi isn't necessarily a bad Dr.

I would ask your doctor if there are other concerns with your child that make her concerned about rolling too early. Maybe she is seeing other red flags as well?

This. I'd give your doctor the benefit of the doubt unless you have other concerns or questions about other things he/she has said. If that's the case, I'd find another pedi.

  • Your doctor is doing what he's supposed to do. You told him your child rolled over early and he responded as he should. It could be normal but it could be one of the first signs of hypertonicity leading him to want to evaluate furthur for cerebral palsy.

A good doctor will take a good history and physical and evaluate anything out of the ordinary. With your post being the only info I have regarding your doctor, I am not inclined to jump on the " get a new doctor" bandwagon.

  • Sounds wacky to me.  Milestone ages are averages, not every baby is the same.  and if anything, reaching a milestone early is even better.

My guy rolled from his tummy to back at 7 wks and finally from back to tummy at 3 mos.

ETA- didn't know that could be indicative of other health problems like CP.  I do think your ped should've mentioned why he/she was concerned and explained it better.

  • The day after we got home from the hospital, DS rolled from his back to his side, then to his tummy. He did it again two days later, and can still do it today. Your Pedi is weird. lol

He also does this in reverse, from tummy to side, then to back.
