Went to the ER this morning, RH negative problems

I woke up this morning and found I had blood when I wiped. I was worried so I went to the ER, ultrasound showed a healthy heartbeat, placenta and cervix. However this being my second pregnancy and being RH negative they believe that caused my bleeding so they gave me my Rhogam shot today and told me I needed to be on bed rest and follow up with my OB in two days. I'm glad the baby is ok but I stupidly googled this and now I'm terrified. Anyone else going through this.

Re: Went to the ER this morning, RH negative problems

  • I'm sorry. Glad all is fine with baby and you for most part. Take it easy.

  • I'm Rh negative and DH is Rh positive.

In a healthy pregnancy w/o any bleeding, you still receive an Rh shot around 28 weeks and then again in the hospital if the baby is Rh +.  When you have bleeding, they give you an "extra" shot as a precaution.  The bed rest is probably b/c of the bleeding, not the shot.

I've personally had two Rh shots already (one after my m/c and one after some bleeding with this pregnancy) and didn't have any problems with them.

  • Gosh, I'm so sorry. So glad you got to go in and they checked you both out and things were relatively okay. DON'T Dr. Google anything. You'll see the worse case scenarios and/or things that aren't necessarily true. I'm sure you know that but it just doesn't help.

  • Is your first LO RH - or +?  What is your DH?

Did you get the Rhogam shot with your first pg?

If your LO and/or your DH are RH-, you have nothing to worry about (ETA: as far as your RH factor goes) and your spotting should have nothing to do with your RH factor.  If you got the Rhogam shot with your first pg (and after if your LO was RH+) you should not have any problems.  But regardless of that, all OBs take blood early on in your pg and it tests for those antibodies.  If you had the antibodies for some reason, your OB would have told you already and they would be monitoring you more closely.

Yes, ER employees are medically trained, but they are not always very knowledgable in OB related medicine.  For sure talk to your OB, but I'm sure your RH factor has nothing to do with it.  And it is good you got the Rhogam shot today.

What type of activities have you done lately?  Have you and your DH had sex in the last couple days?  Have you been constipated and straining when trying to have a BM?  Either of those things are common reasons to have spotting while pg.

GL and I hope it is nothing serious.

    I agree with the above.

I am Rh negative and DH is Rh Positive as well. I had gotten my antibody levels (which can occur when/if baby's blood and Mommy's blood mixes) checked at the beginning of my pregnancy and it came back negative. I had some spotting once a month for the first couple months. I had a Rhogam shot to prevent antibodies. Later I did have another antibody screen and I came back positive. I met with the specialist and they had me do another antibody screen a couple weeks later and the antibody count went down. The specialist believes that it was a prolonged temporary spike of a positive result from the Rhogam shot and that everything is fine. Even if you do get Rh-sensitized the specialist explained to me that they just monitor you more closely and that most pregnancies are still carried to full term.

Just don't let yourself worry about it. If you made it this far without any Rh issues you have a good chance of it being nothing. The doctors seemed to do exactly what is needed to prevent the Rh-sensitization that can come from Mommy/Baby blood mixing. :)

  • About 2 weeks ago I too had some bleeding. We went to ER and found out I just had a small tear. Very common. Take it easy. I am also o neg and had the shot but our doc did not say the two were related. Still chat with your doc but don't stress!

I'm sorry! I don't have any advice or insight into it, but I'm glad everything looks okay. HUGS!

This! Take care of yourself and do your best to relax.

This is all accurate. The Rhogam shot is not because they thought that was what was causing your bleeding, you would already know that. It was BECAUSE of the bleeding, to prevent problems with future LO's. Don't worry until you follow up with your OB and let them tell you what's going on. The ER's job is to prevent disaster, which they did, but not to diagnose or treat any OB conditions.

    Waiting for #3!

  • I'm also RH negitive.  With my first I had no problems, so just the two shots... however with this one I've already had to have two.  the first because I had light spotting at 5 weeks and the second because I had bleeding and a clot at 15 weeks.  Also at the 15 week one, they said I had built up antibodies already so they had to specialize the shot they gave me... since then everything has been fine but I keep thinking I should have my antibodies checked again just in case.

I wouldn't worry too much about the shot etc.  Just take it easy and rest.  After my bleeding I felt so fragile for the next few days... it's a scary thing for sure.  Take care of yourself!

  • Thank you for all the support ladies, whilst going though this I am in the middle of a battle for health insurance. So I have been on the phone non stop explaining my situation, after speaking to a supervisor and my dr's office I finally got a follow up appointment scheduled for today at 4:15pm. I was scheduled to have an ultrasound today at 2:30 as well, but I don't think that will happen because I won't have medical again until sometime next week.

I think the DR at the ER explained it wrong as well, they are always in a rush ad never take the time to explain things to you properly. I'll hopefully get some answers today and find out if I need to stay on bed rest.

As to my first pregnancy, my DS was RH pos and I had the shots at 28 weeks and after birth. My DH is RH pos as well. I don't know if my last pregnancy being over 6.5 years ago has any effect on the whole RH factor or not, but that's the situation.

Thank you again for all the info, support and encouragement.
