I am looking at purchasing either the Britax Boulevard or Pavilion for my daughter. They both say up to 70 lbs fowrard facing. Is she really going to be in this seat until she is 70 lbs?? It is worth it to spend $300 on a seat that says it will go to 70 lbs to have her out of it earlier and having to buy a booster. Or just buy a less expensive seat for up to 40-50 lbs and then buy a booster after that?? Why are these high weight limits so appealing????
Re: Convertible Car Seats -- Weight Limit Help
Agreed. If you want a seat to last you until you need a booster a Britax will probably not be the best choice unless your child is very petite. I'd look into the Graco Size4Me/MyRide, Diono Radian, Chicco Nextfit (not coming out until April), and Clek Foonf. My daughter is on the smaller side and I got the Peg Perego convertible which I love and is a taller seat but it's just not quite as tall as the other I listed above. I'm sure someone else will chime in here if I left any off.
This. The most important aspect of the convertible seat is the shell height and how tall the harness slots are. For most kids, that weight limit isn't a factor. You will find that seats with a lower weight limit (like 40-50 lbs) generally will have a lower height limit as well.
Ideally you want a seat that will fit your child until about 5 years. Minimum age for boostering is 4 years, but most kids aren't mature enough at that time.
Britax seats are nice and easy to install, but they are generally shorter than a lot of other seats on the market.
We just bought the Graco MySize70 (also known as the Size4Me or Headwise), and I love the seat. It fits my 38", 32 lb, 2.5 yo rear facing with room to grow, and it actually still (barely) fits my 52", 53 lbs, 6.5 yo forward facing.

The 1" rule only applies to rear facing. A Britax seat should RF an average height child until age 2-3. If your goal is to RF longer, a different seat would be better for you.
FYI- I just ordered a Pavilion from Kohl's for $226, the BLVD would be less. They are having a baby sale and I used a 30% off coupon code (CUPID30). After tax it's still cheaper than Amazon.
You are right. According to car-seat.org the latest models have this guideline as the height limit for FF:
A child will outgrow this seat by height when he exceeds the 49? height limit OR when the top of his ears are above the top of the shell (not the movable head restraint) OR when the shoulders are above the top harness position.
