Babies: 6 - 9 Months

6-9 month mommies, give a 3-6 monther some advice

im a ftm, with a daughter who just turned four months old last friday. well, my husband has a work convention coming up in june in CA- we live in ohio so, flying would be our choice of travel- our daughter will be 8 months by that time. SO my question is, ladies with an 8 month old, would you recommend that as an okay age to fly (being on a plane for hours, plus airport plus all that jazz)? or is it to soon? i think 8 months seems reasonable but, my husband has some reservations about it. neither of us know the answer so, if you guys could throw some advice my way, that'd be awesome! thanks ladies!

  • As a mom of 7 month old twins I will tell you that it's perfectly fine.  We traveled with them at 3 months and 5 and a half months.  They did great.  Make sure you have food for her for take off and landing.  The sucking motion helps the pressure.  If you plan it really well...feed her before take off.  Mine fell right to sleep when we did that and slept through both take off and landing.

We live in Houston and have been to Orlando and NJ so the flights were 2.5 hours and up to 4 hours for the flight back to Houston from NJ.

I'm sure she will do just fine.

  • I would do it. Way easier to travel with a baby than a toddler. The only thing is, if your flight is pretty long, I would look into buying a seat for baby (and then strapping the carseat into the plane's seat). That way you don't have to hold onto DD for x amount of hours.

Pack light or check your bags. When we flew (and it was only with DD1 right before she turned 2), we got one free bag checked and did the rest carry on. I wish we would have just spent the extra money and checked a second bag or packed lighter. We had our hands full trying to carry DD1 (second mistake was not bringing a stroller for the airport), 2 carry on bags, my purse and a diaper bag.

  • Go for it!  We've already flown with DD2 at 4 months and 5 months, and she was great.

I second the recommendation to check bags and bring a stroller for the airport-LO will get heavy!

  • my daughter is 7m and we've flown from Alaska to Boston twice (2m and 6m) and have 2 more trips planned. I agree with everyone else- pack light, check bags, use a stroller in the airport. We also attach our car seat to our stroller and gate check both. Our daughter is a great traveler. Good luck.
  • We flew to Detroit with our twins @ 4 mos. old.  It was a direct 4.5 hour flight.  They did so well.  Although it was nice to not have to pay for extra seats (they sat in our laps), it was definitely a handful for the flight even though they slept.  It was a little uncomfortable for me & my husband.  But you only have 1, so I'd imagine it'd be much easier.

  • I will be taking my 3rd cross country flight with my DS! He's flown at 10 weeks, 5.5 months, and now we're going again at 7 months. This time we bought him his own seat so we can take the carseat, but the last 2 times he did GREAT. We even took a red eye, and he slept on me the whole time (not so comfortable for me, but he was fine). For some reason, airplanes tend to cause diapers to fail so be ready for some explosions - I would bring an extra shirt for you, and a couple outfits for the baby. We've needed them! Also feed on take off and landing, and if you can get an aisle seat, it's much easier because the few times he did get fussy I just walked him around and he loved saying hi to all the other passengers. We gate checked the stroller and car seat no problem. This time we may wear him through the airport because it was a lot of stuff. Hope that helps.

  • Go for it! DS has flown to Denver, Wichita and KC with us at 4, 6 and 7 months, and will be flying to St. Louis at the end of this month. I nurse him on take offs and landings, wear him in my Ergo through the airport, and bring a variety of toys to entertain him. He also loves people watching, so airports and airplanes are great for that.

I also make sure to change him right before getting on the airplane. My goal is to not have to change him when we're on the airplane. It doesn't always work out that way, but I prefer to at least maximize my chances of not having to do so.

  • I think it's fine. She will be old enough.

  • I totally traveled with a 3 month old.  It was actually easier than the most recent 8 month old time...  Younger she slept more, and wanted to play less.  It was much easier to handle her when she weighed less also.  She didn't get bored as easy.  Go for it.

  • It should go great. I took my oldest to Ireland when she was only 6 months old. We had a connection in New York and then we had our 6 hour flight over to Ireland. To be honest she slept most of the way. I know usually it is not the most optimal seats but I suggest you get seats closer to one of the engines. The humming noise usually relaxes them and helps them sleep. My DD slept most of the trip. In her first year she was quite the frequent traveler and did great and slept on pretty much every plane ride. Good luck!
