Babies: 9 - 12 Months

am i over thinking things? (long)

i know i tend to, so sometimes i need to ask people if i am or if there is cause for concern.

anyway, so i wrote last week how ds (who is about 10 months, and 9 months adjusted) rolled off our bed.  i took him to urgent care and the doctor checked him out and he said ds seemed fined and showed no outward signs of injury.  on the way home, i realized that our bed has a side board that i believe ds may have hit his head on b/c he had a small bump on his noggin.  then the next day, our car got hit while parked in a lot by a lady who tried to park her car in the space next to us and obviously overshot it.  she hit the driver's side brake lamp area and luckily dh was in the car with the little ones.  he said it was a definite impact and that it felt like they were going over a large speed bump.  dh said ds started crying.

those things happened on sat and sun, respectively.  then on tues i took ds to our regular pedi for a followup from urgent care, and again, dr said he seemed fine and no outward signs of injury, blah blah blah.  he said that if there aren't any signs of injury by then, then he's probably fine.

so a week has passed and i'm still so worried that ds's brain may have been "bungled" by the fall (and possibly hitting the side board) and the accident.  i feel that he's not babbling as much as he used to (though right after the fall and on the way to urgent care he was babbling up a storm) and he's not finishing his nighttime bottles anymore (though he still eats great during the day).  am i over analyzing this?  my friends who are accustomed to my craziness (and thankfully accept me the way i am hopefully) tell me i am over reacting...do i know how many times their lo's have hit their heads on things?  so do you guys think i am?  help!

  • Truthfully, yes, you're over thinking this.  In a week there would be signs he was brain injured - obvious signs.  Eyes that wouldn't focus or line up, vomiting, seizures, etc.  I'm sure your LO is fine.

  • You'd see definitive, obvious signs of head trauma by now if there was a problem, not just stuff that seems odd.  It's easy to point at unusual behavior as something that resulted from the accidents but if doctors are telling you he's fine, I'd trust that.

  • My DD has fallen twice, and both times we went to the emergency room.  Once she had a bump the size of a golf ball on her head.  They did a CAT scan once.  She had nothing.  They said if there are no signs of vomiting, etc., she is fine.

I think you are overthinking the issue.  She seems fine.

actually he did vomit...twice.  once on saturday and another time on sunday so exactly a week from the fall and the accident.  both days he threw up after his bottle feed (at 8pm) right before bed.  i'm hoping it was eating-related...right?

  • The vomitting would be sooner than a week afterwards and he'd be lethargic.  I really think you're borrowing trouble here.

yes, i feel that too...thanks so much for your help...and to the other posters...thanks to you guys too.

    on a happier note...happy valentine's day!

  • I know what it's like to obsess over things like this...I come from a long line of worry warts! If it were me, I would call the doctor with my concerns about the vomiting, bottle issue, and decreased babbling. Talking to the ped might help ease your mind...but they will most likely tell you everything is fine! I do agree with the other pp's that you're most likely making a mountain out of a mole hill, but then again, I do it all the time! Trust your motherly instinct and just give the doctor a quick ring...can't hurt, right?
