Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Can we discuss moving to Whole Cow?s Milk for a second???

So I am anticipating this change coming up in two weeks when my son hits 1 year. I currently pump all day while I am at work but still get up at 5 am to BF my son then put him back to sleep until 7-7:30 am when my husband takes him to daycare. Also my son goes down for the night at 7:30 pm so I still think it?s possible he is hungry at 5 am. Since I know I am completely stopping BFding at 12 months should I break him of the habit of waking at 5 am to eat then go back to sleep now?

When should I start mixing whole milk with BM, and should I stop heating the milk up all together? I also tried moving to a regular sippy cup without the straw on Saturday and it was complete meltdown so I decided to just stop and wait a little longer.

What is everyone doing or planning on doing? I am a first time mom and have no clue and my 1 year pedi apt for my son isn?t until March 8th.

Thanks in advance!!!

I don't BF but, I am going to wait to do anything until my son's 12 month appointment around March 10th. I spoke to the pedi recently and she said not to change anything or even start mixing in whole milk until his appointment so that's what I'm doing. I guess I'm not in any rush except that formula is so damn expensive.

As far as the sippy cup goes, it took my son a while before he got the hang of it so I wouldn't stop trying but keep trying a little everyday until he figures it out.

Thank you! I feel like I should wait to move over to cows milk as well but I am so ready to stop breastfeeding but I don't want to move to formula just to change it a week after that. My son does use a sippy cup with a straw with water during meals just fine. I just wasnt sure if it was odd to have him drink milk with a straw.

  • She has had WCM a couple times with meals already in a sippy cup and seems to like it. When she hits a year, I will probably start switching out one formula feeding a day with WCM until she's off formula entirely. We are currently working on phasing out bottles. Yesterday at daycare she took formula from a sippy all day and only had her bottle in the morning, which was good.

She only typically has 3 bottles of formula a day now anyway, so I don't think the switch is going to be too major.

Wow that's really great! Salt how many oz does she take in her 3 bottles? My son takes about 4 bottles a day but in totaly only 16-18 oz of milk

Same here. He's been mostly dropping his morning bottle now so when I drop him off at day care in the morning, he has breakfast right away and I've been giving him WCM in his straw cup to drink with his meal. I got crazy good deals on formula and I have a lot stocked up so I suspect he'll stay on formula for another month or so just to get through it but I plan to keep reducing the amount of formula and having him start doing all of his drinking from his sippy/straw cups. Sometimes I think I'm more attached to the bottles than he is.

Yeah I can understand the bottle thing. I like doing his bedtime bottle with my son. One he does a sippy cup  I wonder if they sit there and drink all the milk to the end like they do with a bottle or just kinda drink when they feel like it. Hence no more snuggle before bed.

Between 4-6. It varies. So she's usually eating around the same amount as your DS is eating.

See DD dropped the nighttime bottle first. By the time we are finished dinner, it's usually close to 7pm so there is no need to feed her again. Instead I get her in her jams and we cuddle in her chair and read a story before bed.

  • I have been BF'ing my daughter for 11 months now and we began introducing organic WCM about a week ago.  I currently put between 1-2 oz. in with BM in her bottles for daycare.  So far she's been fine with it.  I'll continue to mix WCM with BM and increase the amount to equal parts WCM and BM until she's one year and from there decide when to go entirely WCM.  As far as BF'ing, I let her tell me when she's hungry.  If she doesn't wake up hungry in the morning, then I don't offer.  We're so close to the one year mark I am not stressing about missed feedings and supply issues.  I will pump at work until her 1st birthday and use the remainder of my freezer stash.  Good luck to you!!!

P.S......she gets a sippy cup and/or a straw cup with water for lunch and dinner and does fine with them.  I've also put milk (BM and WCM) in her sippy cup and she drank from it with no problems!

  • I just wanted to echo the other pp's and say that the sippy takes time. We've been working with the sippy for months now and he's only just starting to warm up to it. GL!

Once she dropped the nightime bottle did she get up earlier because she was hungry?? My son eats a ton of pureed solids...issues with textures still so even though he eats 8 oz of food at dinner I think once he eats more he will start to drop bottles.

Nope. She wakes up at the same time as she usually would. I'm not sure how much she eats at dinner because usually it's not purees. She just eats whatever I eat and stops when she's done.

I'm nervous about dropping his bedtime bottle just because it's the only one of the day that he finishes and seems to really enjoy. I think he'd be totally confused if I just put him to bed without a bottle. I guess I have to try at some point! He gets dinner around 5:30pm then a bottle at 7ish. He drinks more of the bottle than he eats food lately though. Eating solids has suddenly become a struggle.

Yeah mine downs his bottle as well!

  • My pedi. said if I ran out of formula a couple of weeks before E turns one, no biggie, just go to milk. With DD1, I didn't know any better, and I just ran out of formula a week or two before her first birthday, and I gave her milk just like I would have formula. Aside from a surprised look on her face (like, where have you been hiding this stuff???), she was fine. Formula is already milk based (unless it is soy or whatever), so you aren't really introducing some crazy new thing to them. I also didn't know about the rush to get them off of bottles. That must be a new thing. I haven't heard anything from pedi. or DC ladies regarding the need for a sippy cup over a bottle. I offer E sippy cups, but she is all business with the bottle, and the sippy cup is more a novelty. DD1 had a bottle of milk at night until she was 2, and I never gave it a second thought. I think some of these milestones we put on ourselves unnecessarily. Of course, this is all a formula based conversation, and I have no idea how it relates to BF'd babies :(

  • Since the 12 month mark is not a magical moment I base moving to cows milk on readiness.  Both of my kids have gained quickly and been hearty table food eaters.  With DS I've done the same as I did with DD.  Around 11 months I start changing a bottle to cows milk instead of formula and I up the meal size a bit.  By 1 year (so it generally doesn't take then a whole month even) they are up to 3 meals and 2 snacks of table food and no formula just milk (and a lot less of it!).  I also begin trying water in the sippy every day.

  • We are in the process of transitioning, first birthday was Monday!  Things are not going smoothly.  Is it normal for the baby to not like cow milk (as much) at first?
