Ergo ?

Sooo I've been using my k'tan for DS and now that he's 3 months, I got an ergo because DH wants in on the BW action. Do I need the infant insert or is DS ok at 3 months? He has good head control. Also, does anyone have the ergo winter jacket? And if so how do you like it? Is it warm enough? If no jacket, what do you dress your LO in for winter walks.

Re: Ergo ?

  • You don't need the insert.  Unless he's a really big 3 month old though you will likely need to use something to boost him up for a bit and to keep his legs from overspreading.  If you fold a small blanket and have him sit on that, he can be "legs out" but he won't have his legs overspread since he'll be sitting on the blanket and not on the waist band (you want his legs to be able to swing at the knee). And it will boost him up so the carrier doesn't come higher than the midline of his ear.

For front carries you can use an oversized jacket that will button over both of you.  I do have a babywearing coat but haven't tried the ergo coats.

  • I don't know about the infant insert, but I think the recommendations are to use it for up to 12 pounds or so, but I don't remember exactly.

As far as what to put him in to keep him warm, here's what we do:

If it's not too cold I put DD in a jammies, hat and sweatshirt (sometimes mittens) and then stap her on. Sometimes I'll wear one of DH's old coats over us too. Sometimes also I'll wrap a receiving blanket around her bottom half, but only if it's chilly and I don't have a coat for over us. If it's really cold and I need a big jacket all for myself, I'll wear my coat and strap LO on the outside. I will then put DD in her jammies, and in her "bear suit" which is a Carter's fuzzy snow suit thing, and a hat. FWIW I've never taken her out of the Ergo at the end of our walk and had her be cold, she's always toasty warm :)

  • Hmm I will try him in there in his snowsuit. It's cold here in Toronto. DS is 14 lbs so I will try the blanket trick with him and see if that works! Thanks!
