Job advice

Hey ladies - I know it's been awhile since I was active here but I have a question I was hoping some of you could help me with. I was laid off in October - got our BFP for baby#2 in Nov (unplanned but very excited for) and I'm due in July. I had a very promising job interview today & was able to get through the whole day without mentioning my pregnancy. I am very very excited about this job & there's no reason why I wouldn't be able to do it even though I would be taking some time off shortly after starting.

So my question is this: when is the proper moment to disclose my pregnancy? If/when they make me an offer? When I accept the offer? Or when I start the job?

Thanks in advance for your advice! Have any of you been in this situation?

Re: Job advice

  • I wouldn't tell them until after they give you the job. Legally they can't discriminate against pregnancy but if you don't get it there's no way to prove they didn't discriminate. Good luck!

  • Ditto pp. if you can get through your probationary phase too, even better.

  • I disclosed my pregnancy during the negotiations. I carry health insurance for my family and was concerned about paying cobra during my leave. They agreed to pay half my cobra during my leave.
  • I agree with the others about waiting until they've given you the job and if you can stretch it past the probationary period, even better. Congratulations!

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. This position won't really have a "probationary period" per se & I'm already showing (though I wore a blazer that mostly hid the bump during my interview. I just don't want to seem like I was hiding it. I wouldn't actually tell them before they offer me the job. But I think I will tell them right when I start (if I get it of course) since I'll really only be working about 4 1/2 months before I go out on leave.

Thankfully DH has us on his health insurance, so that's not an issue. And also the short term disability benefits would kick in right away, so I'll still get a portion of my pay while out on leave.

  • I actually asked my current boss what he tought I should do, since I will be starting at a new place while pregnant. He said that he definitely would NOT want to know the 1st day, or even 1st week. He would rather a person wait a couple of weeks/a month to get settled before telling him that. So, that is what I plan on doing and also reiterating that I will definitely be back right after the 6/8 weeks are up.
