Fifth Disease

I was just informed my the school nurse where I teach that I have been exposed to a child with fifth disease. Had no idea what this even is but she suggested I call my doctor. I did and they recommended I come in for blood work as soon as I could today to see if I was immune. The nurse at my doctor's office encouraged me not to worry, and that I'm probably already immune as a teacher. My results will be ready by Friday for my appt. Anyone have any experience with this? I've never even heard of it.

Re: Fifth Disease

  • The common name is slap cheek and I am also getting my blood tested for it since my niece was exposed and showing symptoms aswell.  I think I had it as a kid but I don't remember.

If you aren't immune, it will mean that they have to monitor your fetal growth more closely since it can effect growth under 20 weeks.   Don't stress yet. I have a friend who was in the exact same position as you last year as a teacher and it was all perfectly fine.

  • I had it when I was a kid, but I honestly don't know that much about it.

  • My 2 year old just had it, and my OB wasn't  worried at all.  He said the same thing....as a teacher, I should be immune.  My ultrasound was fine.
  • Agree with PP- most teachers are already immune.  If you're not, they'll watch you more closely as there is a small risk of the fetus developing severe anemia.

  • A couple kids in my preschool had it and the test said I was already immune, so I'm sure you are too. Don't worry.

  • Me! I got a call from the shcool nurse the last day of school before Christmas break. She knew we had been trying and wanted to warn me in case we were pregnant. It was one of the kiddos in my class. Also told me to call my doc. I called my mom who is a former nurse and childbirth educator (does all the classes and such) and honestly if I had been exposed, it would have been prior to implantation so I never called the dr. Did mention it when I went for my pre dr appt. and she said they could test, but I likely didn't have an issue at this point (that was at 7 weeks, so more than 6 since I might have been exposed). Everything checked out great at almost 9 weeks, so they don't feel there is a need at this point. Since you were just exposed, I think it's good you are getting checked. But what they said about being immune is likely to be truely. That is so highly contagious, its been around the building before and you've likely been exposed in the past and build immunity. Good luck!

  • I'm also a teacher and when I was hired to this school board a few years ago we were told that Fifths comes up fairly regularly in the schools here and that if we were pregnant/planning to get pregnant we should have our dr test us to see if we're immune.  So I did and I am.  My dr was surprised that the school board is so on top of it; we get notified about every confirmed case of Fifths or chicken pox within the whole board.  But my dr wasn't worried since most people are immune; one of the times you thought you had a cold it was probably Fifths.

  • Thanks so much! This was helpful. I wish our school was on top of this. I had no idea what it was and that's why I got a little nervous when I heard. Once I was reassured that I most likely have nothing to worry about I felt a lot better. Thanks again!
