finally did the hospital "tour"

"Tour", because my hospital does a digital presentation instead of actual tours because it would be seriously annoying if you were in labor and a group of 50 women and their partners came stomping through the maternity wing as you're exposing yourself to a bunch of strangers.

I'm super excited - found out that I don't have to remove jewelry, we get a free A + A swaddle, they have birth balls in all rooms, showers in all rooms (except the shared recovery rooms), DH can stay overnight in the same room (although that also means that roomie's DH might be there too - awkward....), there's valet parking when you arrive at the hospital (unless it's the middle of the night). I am so hoping that we can upgrade to one of the private recovery rooms (worth every penny to have the privacy and in-room shower), but they are available on a first come-first served basis (and hospital is on the UES of NYC, so everyone wants & can afford that upgrade!).

I do have to say though, they should make their digital tour presentations in a room closer to more bathroom facilities.  After it was over there were 50 women lined up for 3 toilets.  And of course, most of us are used to people saying, you go on ahead, you're pregnant (hahaha, that has NEVER actually happened to me).  Yup, not in this case! Women were looking seriously flustered!

  • No, what's crazy is the cost of parking - it is NYC after all. :) For what it is going to cost to park the car they should valet AND detail the car.

At which hospital are you giving birth?  I'll be at St. Luke's Roosevelt and I just can't get over the $900 a night (above and beyond insurance coverage) the private room costs.  My husband didn't bat an eyelash at the cost (afterall we can afford to live in Midtown no problem) but I think it's insane.  Other friends who gave birth in the city said they're hospitals charge around $500 or so.

Holy cow- that's insane... Granted I'm in Dallas but they recently upgraded the rooms so there are no more shared rooms, but the smallest room is free, then $150 or $200/night depending on if you get a suite or not. I couldn't imagine forking over $900/night!!!

We're going to NYU. It's a $500 something a night upcharge. I think it is totally worth it.  My friend's wife gave birth at NYU and they did not splurge on the private room and their roomie had a CONSTANT parade of guests who were doing prayers and singing... man, I would be way too cranky to deal with that after delivery.  Swear words would be used liberally!

  • I'm feeling totally spoiled.  I think that ALL of the hospitals locally have private post partum rooms.  Our hospital in particular puts you in just one room for the whole thing (save for having a c-section but even then, you depart from and arrive back to the same maternity room).  You'd only leave if you chose a water birth because there is just one birthing tub room.
  • Wow!  I feel a little silly because I didn't even realize they had shared rooms anymore! Embarrassed  That's what I get for living in such a small state like MS.

Wow.  Maybe I should have chosen a dr. with privileges at NYU.  Can't believe SLR is almost double.  What's so funny is that the room isn't that great.  I was expecting the St. Regis or Peninsula.  :-)

  • I live in Chicago and will not have to share a room.  I think it just depends on your hospital.

  • Haha I had my "tour" yesterday too which consisted of an hours worth of paperwork. After that hour the nurse stood up to shake my hand and told me she would see me in 3 weeks. I asked if we got to look around and she said I guess I could show you a recovery room if that is what you want to see. The weirdest thing there was not one woman in labor or one baby in the nursery.

Tiny rant time... they had us enter through the ER and had me sit there and wait with sick coughing people all around me for like 15 min. It seems strange to me to put a healthy pregnant woman in that situation, but what  do I know o.O
