Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Need Travel Advice

I will be a FTM soon and my DH and I have to make plans to attend this brother's destination wedding with a 3 month old.  We can either take a flight with a layover (about 7 hours or so) or drive 13 hours (with a likely overnight stop at a hotel for one night).  I know neither is ideal.  The things we do for family.  Smile  Which do you think would be the most bearable.  We are leaning towards driving so we can stock the car with all the baby's necessities and be able to stop as needed.  TIA!

Re: Need Travel Advice

  • We are about to make a trip too. We have decided to drive so that we can have all the baby gear plus save the baby from being in close contact with all the sick people on the plane.

  • I would absolutely fly! I hate long drives and my baby slept the whole 9 hour flight with one layover, where we played on a blanket at the airport. I flew alone with her and it wasn't bad at all! Maybe ask who you are staying with if they can borrow baby items like a pack n play or bouncy seat. 3 month olds don't need hardly anything and you can check a car seat and stroller for free. I do recommend flying with a boppy though. Saved my arms! Also, I wore DD in an ERGObaby thru the airport and on the flight and didn't have to take her out thru security or on the plane. GL!

this. :)  Driving with my son is complicated after a couple hours. At least when you fly you can soothe the baby, hold him, rock him, feed him, etc as needed.  When driving, you can't do anything unless you stop and pull over. That would make your trip even longer!

  • You also may want to wait to decide until you know if baby likes the car seat. Mine absolutely hates it and we've canceled a couple of driving trips because of it.
Also, we took a 13 hour plane ride followed by a 4 hour plane ride when DD was 3 months and it was super easy. She just nursed and slept.
  • I would fly. We have with both kids and it is super easy. I would wear lo it makes him easier to hold. However some of the airlines did make me take him out of the carrier for take off and landing.
