3rd Trimester

Boppy - Newborn Lounger vs Regular

Hi ladies, I need your feedback. From my shower I got both the Boppy Newborn Lounger and the regular Boppy. Is it useful to keep them both? The Newborn Lounger looks great for laying baby in it from Day 1, but it does state a maximum weight of 16 lbs. The regular Boppy I can use for nursing, and baby can use to 12 months, but it looks like I'd need to wait until they are a few months old to put them in it. Space isn't really an issue in making a decision. Wondering if I could achieve the same effect as the Newborn Lounger by just placing a folded thick blanket under baby in the regular Boppy. Anyone have experience with both?

(Note: Just want to say in advance I do know I'm not supposed to leave baby unattended in either of these)

Re: Boppy - Newborn Lounger vs Regular

  • I'm a FTM but I have recieved both, and am told I will use both.  Lounger good for sitting baby in, regular good for tummy time and eventually sitting up.

Unless you need the $ to purchase "necessary" items- my vote is keep them both and see which works for you- you never know what your baby will like :)

Same here, DD was fine in the regular Boppy. And actually, I liked the Brest Friend better for nursing, so that was really the only way we used the Boppy.

I am getting all three. I will get the lounger, and boppy for LO just to sit and lay in, and the Brest Friend for feeding. I wanted the Nanny Napper, but they have been recalled due to infant deaths and injuries , so I won't be getting that.

  • I never bothered with the lounger.  The regular boppy however is useful for several ages and stages.  You can use if for nursing when they are so tiny they need to be held 'up to' the breast.  Then once you start tummy time as they are a little bigger some moms like to use the boppy.  Finally the boppy is great for when they are first sitting and need some support around them.  The lounger doesn't seem so different to me than a bouncer or a pillow which I always also had around.

My Mom gave me the advise to stop using a nursing aide pillow as quickly as I could so that I would be able to nurse anywhere comfortably and naturally.  I only use the boppy when they are tiny (and only did that with DD).  By the time DS came I didn't need that support anymore.

  • I would say no, but it looks nice to have.

I used the boppy to prop up my little one. Between the swing, swing, bassinet and boppy my kids always had enough places to lay.

  • Slip a zippered (or not) pillow case over the boppy and you have the boppy lounger. I always just tucked a blanket over the boppy, swaddled my LO and let them lay in it. I always thought the lounger was just a lame gimmick to get people to buy two pillows instead of one.

    Personally.

  • We never had a newborn lounger and didn't need one. I'm all for less stuff, especially since we live in a condo. :)

I'm pretty sure they were just recalled due to improper use.  Kind of like if you use the boppy for sleeping because it says right on there not for sleeping.

That said I still let DD nap propped up in the boppy if I was watching her.

OP I think just the regular boppy would do all three, maybe not the most effectively, but I'm all about having less stuff around so I would only get the regular boppy.

That, and there were indeed fatalities.

  • I'm all for the least amount of baby crap as possible.

We had just the Boppy. It worked for BFing until DD was well over a year and worked for her to kind of sit up/lay propped up in it.

16 pounds is going to get you to about 4 months. Sounds like a giant waste of money and material to me.

  • I never used the boppy. I dont know if I'm too short or what, but using it to nurse put the baby above my breast. It was worthless, so I returned it.

  • Yes yes yes keep both! My son is 3 and his brother is due on April 20. I am a stay at home mom and have been since my 1st was born. The lounger saved me many paranoid nights! I breastfed him and would hold him for 30 minutes burping him..even after he burped I still held him and the lounger helped keep him elevated which gave me peace of mind. When he was just days old...I fed him and thought he burped and laid him flat on his back to sleep..only to hear him gurgling a few minutes later and see everything come right back up. It scared me!!! From that moment on I was so paranoid that he would choke so I told myself to make sure by holding him up for 30 minutes after each feeding....yes I would fall asleep with him on me...and Id wake up exhausted and my back hurt but holding him was the best thing ever! He didnt have acid relux...or any problems keeping milk down...he just had an air bubble. Anyway, that lounger is awesome! I loved that I could set it on the couch and spend time with him while he was awake and he even slept on it until he was 4 months old. I also loved the nursing pillow, it saved my back and made breastfeeding easier. You will love having both! My hubby bought a lounger as a gift when we found out that we were expecting. I borrowed my sister in laws lounger the 1st time around The nursing pillow also helped my son sit up when he was learning/gaining strength...and he would lay on it for tummy time. The advertising for it speaks for itself I hope this helps and hope you enjoy them as much as I did. :
  • Thanks everyone for all the advice and opinions! You've given me a lot to chew on and different points of view... This really helps.

  • A male coworker, whose wife had a baby about a year ago, told me months ago, "Just so you know, I'm getting you a Boppy Lounger for your shower.  It's not a surprise now, but they're amazing and that's what you're getting."  So, I added the regular Boppy to my registry and let him get me the lounger.

He swears by it.  I'm going to keep both.
