XP: Just a phase?

Out of nowhere DD has decided she rather try my patience then eat her food.  She swats at the spoon and at the container I use to hold the food and it gets everywhere.  When I give her nonjarred food and put it on her try she eats like 2 pieces of whatever it is and then makes a mess with the rest mooshing it and then throwing it on the floor so the dog can eat it.  She use to be a great eater in terms of never giving me a hard time and really liking just about anything you put in front of her.  Now she thinks it's all a game. Her other new thing is waiting for me to put the spoon in her mouth and instead of swallowing it, she razzes me and basically spits it everywhere.

Please tell me this is a phase.  I can sometimes get away with distracting her by giving her a small tupperware bowl and lid but if that doesn't work I am SOOL.  I just don't want her to be hungry but I also don't want to give her 10 different food options in one sitting before she finds one she will eat if you know what I mean.

Thanks for letting me vent..haha

  • LOL!!!   I hope it is a phase.  My DD is going thru the "I don't want to eat" phase, she is hungry at her next mealtime when she does that! :)  I can't force feed her when her lips are sealed tight.  My DD has also started "bucking me" when I put her in the highchair, she goes stiff and screams, I just tell her she is going one way or the other, we can either do it the easy way or the hard way!!!! I think they are just testing us to see what they can get away with. LOL!!!!!

Haha.  I wish mine would just purse her lips shut, it would avoid the mess and clean up LOL.  Maybe that's the problem, maybe she really just isn't hungry and I'm "forcing" her to eat.  I'll have to try the if she doesnt' want to eat she doesn't want to eat approach and hope that by the next meal she is hungry and eats like a good girl LOL.  As for the bucking me - DD doesn't do it everytime, but she too will do this on occasion and mommy always wins LOL.

  • Micah has started doing this more and more. At first, I thought he was tired, so we've tried moving dinner time up earlier. He still did it. It's so frustrating to watch him throw everything onto the floor. Some times, he'll eat if he sits on one of our laps, and other times he has to eat OUR food. I hope it's a stage.

  • I would try spacing the feedings out more. Maybe she's truly not that hungry when you offer the food.

  • We purse our lips, turn our head back and forth and swat at the spoon... it's fun. If I open my mouth and say AHHHHH sometimes that helps open the mouth... Other times I hold down the arms.

  • Well to me it sounds like your LO is starting to refuse purees. My LO did this so now we have completely eliminated purees. If too much finger food is on her tray she will swipe it off. So to discourage this we sit right with her and give her only a few pieces at a time. We also correct her when she tries to throw it on the floor. I usually grab her arm and say, "A no throwing food" or something direct and to the point. Sometimes she cries, sometimes she laughs, and sometimes she does it anyways. I think it's just their way of figuring out if you mean it, what the rules are, and what to do with this new ability to feed themselves. My DD feeds herself indpendently now. Only thing we feed her is risotto, quinioa, soup, or cereals. Most of these are things we are all eating though so when she gets them it's like a spoonfull of Mommy and Daddy's food which makes it worth eating.

Good luck! Hope your LO stops this behavior soon. But it's totally normal though. The worst is when you go to feed them a spoonfull and they swat it away and it goes flying!! Hahaha :) I"m glad we arn't dealing with that anymore.
