? about play dates

DD has been going to preschool since August. It took her a while to warm up to the children, but now she has befriended a new girl in class. DD keeps saying she wants her friend to come over and play, and I'm sure the two kids talk about doing that.

It would be a little awkward to invite a kid over when I don't know their parents (I know I wouldn't want DD to go to someone's house if I didn't know the parents really well).

What should I tell DD?

Also, what should I do if the girl's parents invite DD over?

Re: ? about play dates

  • Why don't you wait around one day and say hello to the other girls mom?  If that isn't possible ask if you can put a note onto or into her go home stuff telling the mom what you've told us and asking if they are able to or would like to have a play date.

At this age I would expect to be inviting both the parent and the girl for a play date.  Certainly I would expect that until you all have met and feel comfortable, etc.

  • Is your DD doing a 2 or 3 day a week preschool?  Perhaps invite the other girl/mom over for a play date pizza lunch.  Buy the little pizza crusts and sauce and set out two bowls of cheese and some peperoni and any veggies you think might work.  The girls can play a bit, do their pizzas, eat, and maybe play some more.  All the while you can talk with the other mama.

I'm having a pizza play date tomorrow ;-)

this.  At this age I expect parents to come and stay too. We have kid snacks and I make coffee with scones or something for the mom. We talk while kids play.

  • At that age, I would expect the parent's to stay.  I would suggest and activity play date, meet at a park, library for storytime etc.  It's easier to get to know the parents without the fear of uncomfortable silences.
