My doctor informed me to get the vaccine and that I should have anyone who is going to be around LO get it as well. I told my mom this since she is coming to visit on his due date. She said she would get it but when she went to her DR he told her that since she had it when she was little she didn't need it again and that he's never heard of anyone getting it twice. Everything that I have been researching (granted this is on google so I take it with a grain of salt) has said that new studies have shown that it becomes obsolete after 5 to 10 years after getting it. I told her this and she said she would ask her dr again... I kind of wish she would skip this asking her dr part, trust my OB and get the shot.
Has anyone else heard of not needing it more than once in a lifetime?!
Re: Whooping cough vaccine..
Both dr's are correct. Your mom does not need the whooping cough vaccine, she needs the booster. The vaccine is called DTaP and is a series of 3 shots that you get as a child. The booster is Tdap, and has weaker versions of the vaccine just to boost your immunity, and is intended for you to get every 5-10 years and during each pregnancy.
This. My husband just got the Tdap and I have the vaccine info paper. Also I was not aware that you only get it once. I will quote the info, hope this helps.
Td vaccine- has been used for many years. It protects against tetanus and diphtheria,
Tdap vaccine was licensed in 2005. It is the first vaccine for adolescents and adults that protects against pertussis as well as tetanus and diphtheria.
A Td booster dose is recommended every 10 years. Tdap is given only once.
