fighting diaper changes & getting dressed?!?!

Hi everyone. I don't get to post much on here, but I wanted to check in and see if anyone else is dealing with this issue.

DS has recently decided that EVERY time he needs a diaper change and EVERY time he needs to get clothes/pjs put on, it's the biggest fight of his life! He absolutely HATES it. Cries like his poor little heart is breaking, and screams, and twists/bucks/rolls/arches for all he's worth. (And since he's a BIG boy [in 18 month clothes right now]; he's actually really strong!)

We've tried distracting with toys/teethers/his toothbrush (he ADORES brushing his 6 teeth), telling him no, letting him play with diapers/the wipes container, etc. Sometimes it works for a few seconds, and sometimes it doesn't. Thank heavens we were changing his diaper and getting him undressed for his bath a few nights ago, because poop got EVERYWHERE. Even DH couldn't hold him still! DS was literally trying to roll off of the changing table, and it took both of to get him clean enough/unclothed enough to get him into the bath! It was crazy. I don't what on earth happened to make it become such a huge fight, but it definitely has!

Anyone going through the same? Is it a phase? Does anyone have any suggestions/tips/tricks?!

  • Has he been sick at all? My DD was doing this awhile back and after a couple weeks of fighting I found out she had an ear infection. She literally stopped fighting the next day when the antibiotics started working.

  • Well, he had an ear infection back in November, but he hasn't been sick/had a cold since New Year's, and this behavior just started like 3 weeks ago. DS does often pull at his ears, but it's one of his sleep behaviors. Since his ear infection though, I've been afraid that I could just be missing another one because it is one of his sleep things, (and DS didn't even run a tell-tale high fever with the first ear infection- only a low grade 99), so I've taken him to the doc a few times when he's had a runny nose, etc, and he had "a little fluid" in his ear one time, but they said it could be residual, and it wasn't infected. So I'm not sure. His next appt isn't until his 1 year in April. I might just take him in this week again anyway. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • My boys do this too. I gave up on using the changer a few mo ago as it just made it worse. The hardest part about changing them on the floor is keeping the wipes, diapers, dirty diapers away from the other baby LOL.

    I'm hoping it's just a stage..

I can only imagine throwing another baby into that mix!!! LOL! We have a hard enough time with our one! Yeah; I'm hoping it's just a phase too!

  • My daughter does the same thing --- I am hoping it is a phase.  We have to distract her to get her to stay still.  She wriggles, flips over, has a melt down.  We have this glow worm that plays music / lights up which sometimes helps.  I sometimes will give her her pjs to hold.  We are thinking we are going to have to move the changing pad to the floor and no longer change her up on the dresser.  I am afraid she is going to fall off no matter how careful we are.  I think it just me holding her down -- she has a mind of her own right now and does not like being restained.  We are dealing with the same thing in the car seat.

Exactly! Meltdown is the perfect word. Yeah; our changer is attached to his crib, and that's what he was literally trying to flip off of the other night. Scared me silly. It literally took my DH and I to keep him from doing so! So I think on nights when DH is in school, I'm just going to get him ready on the floor after his bath! (And yeah, DS is odd about his carseat. Sometimes he stiffens up and tries to stand when we're putting him in it, and sometimes he's fine. No rhyme or reason. You may be onto something; it might just be an independence assertion thing. He is most definitely a stubborn little dude! (He is starting to let go of the furniture and just stand there and balance himself, and take a small unassisted "lunge" step between gaps, but when we hold his hands to try to help him walk, he melts down, picks up his feet and goes "noodle"! As soon as we let go, he gets up and tries to do whatever he was doing on his own again! Heaven help me. lol!)

  • Benny did that for a while right after he learned to crawl, we had to distract him by putting a toy in his mouth, but he would still fight. But now, it's a lot better, he doesn't scream and fight so much he just tries to wiggle his way out. So for Benny it was a phase. Singing would help sometimes too.
