New Mom Help

Hello all!

I am a first time Mom. My son is 6 weeks old.. he is perfect :) We are having a few issues though, or at least I am. I am stressing over most everything haha. The big issue is that he is only happy during his awake hours if he is nursing. Really, he is CONSTANT. I've tried to give myself some relief by giving him a pacifier, and sometimes he will take it, but usually he refuses and just wants me. If he does have the pacifier and is content it's usually when he is in his swing or laying down on a blanket... it seems like he is only content being held by me when he is nursing.. otherwise if I hold him or anyone else holds him, he cries... he cries all the time unless he is nursing... I don't know if he is collicy and that's why he is crying all the time, or if he doesn't like to be held... there are some times that he will lay on a blanket content for a few minutes but once you try to hold him he cries... I don't know if he is in pain, or if he just doesn't like to be held, or anything else... and I don't mind letting him "nurse" all the time, but I know it's not good bc he has no time to explore the rest of the world, and it makes it really hard for me to get stuff done around the house, or even eat... and my husband feels like the baby hates him bc he never has any happy time getting to hold him... and my poor Mom lives 8 hours away and this is her first grandbaby, and when she comes to see him for short weekends he is always crying with her or just nursing with me.... does anyone have any suggestions?? is my baby in pain? is he just too used to nursing all the time? does he really hate being held?? *sigh*

  • Coming from someone who JUST went through this, I can say it is likely just a stage. The experts say that crying hits a peak at 6 weeks and boy was that true for me. My DD did the exact same thing as yours and would cry all the time unless she was nursing or asleep. I was also questioning whether it was colic, but wouldn't you know today she is eight weeks old and she really isn't doing that anymore. Sometimes, but not all the time. Maybe it was a growth spurt, I don't know, but take comfort in the fact that it shouldn't last more than a couple of weeks tops.

  • Thanks, I feel a bit of relief now.. a part of me is still worried bc I feel like it's been this way since he was born and perhaps not just a phase... but I also know that up until this point he truly was sleeping most of the time he was eating.. so I do hope that it will pass soon!! It happened again today that he was crying allllll day except he had some happy times and almost giggles ONLY when he was laid on his back... I really want more than anything for him to have some happy moments being held by me or others!

  • Our LO got like that at 6 weeks too. I'm hoping it's a stage, but we also just got diagnosed with reflux. He's seriously only happy when eating and when you burp him, he gets crazy fussy. It's helped to keep him upright for 30 minutes after feedings, but we hold him upright. He also loves his swing! (He is actually currently napping in it.) Pacifier helps too - the sucking seems to help him with the reflux, I think.

  • My LO was the same way at 6 weeks and her ped said she had really bad reflux. He gave me a script for Zantac and I used that for about a month and she is doing much better! You may want to ask your ped about it and try that. But it will pass, hopefully soon! I know how hard it is when all they do is cry but it does get better, one LO is 10 weeks old (almost 11) eek! Hope that helps!
