When did you find out re: mono-di, di-di, mono-mono?

I've had 2 ultrasounds. You can clearly tell the twins are in 2 different sacs. I did IVF and transferred 2 blasts so I'm pretty sure I'm having di-di but I want to know for sure. The ultrasound tech said I would find out at my 10-12 week ultrasound with the MFM even though I'm having at least 2 ultrasounds before then. Can they not tell before 10-12 weeks or is it just that my office doesn't want to look / wants the MFM to tell me?

OT: We got to see 2 healthy perfect heart beats today! It definitely made things real. I almost fell asleep on the ultrasound table though... I'm exhausted!

I'm have mo-di, and while my ob was pretty sure of that, she sent me on to the mfm just in case. The mfm is much better at determining which type of twin. They were able to tell at around 9 weeks for me.

I was told di-di at my 6 week u/s. It was very obvious on my u/s. The sacs at the time were not even close to eachother. My guess is di-di for you as well considering the transfer of 2 blasts. You never though.

We were told di-di at our 8 week ultrasound at our regular OB office.

Congrats on two healthy heartbeats!! Isn't it the most amazing feeling to see them on that screen?!!

Actually no. By the time the MFM sees most patients it is past 10 weeks and can make it harder.

OP - two sacs = di/di. Now di/di does not equal fraternal. But given that you transferred 2 blasts then likely fraternal.

Mono-mono or mono-di the babies would be in the same sac initially and then at about 14 weeks you can tell between mono-mono and mono-di when the amnion and chorion fuse.

I guess I should have been a little more specific, but seeing as my mfm saw me at 9 weeks, I just assumed that op's dr would have told her to go see the mfm ASAP if she thought there would be an issue. It can get harder to see the placenta if you go later because two placentas can look like one if they fuse together later on. Generally, though, doesn't it get easier to see the amniotic divide later on in a pregnancy? Like easier between weeks 12-18 versus 6-12, not towards the end.

I had my first u/s at 10 weeks with my OB. She clearly said she only saw one placenta and a very thin dividing membrane. She did not use the term mono/di with me but I figured it out based on my own googling and then it was confirmed at my 17 weeks a/s by my MFM. Anyway, yes they are able to differentiate between mono and di/di right away. Maybe your OB or RE doesn't feel comfortable diagnosing that? I sounds like you have di/di. It's not hard to tell in early pregnancy, just google it Wink

I agree that it sounds like yours are di/di. I was originally told that my twins were mo/mo, at 7 weeks. It was actually the ladies on here who told me that it was too early to tell at 7 weeks. Sure enough, my MFM found the membrane dividing the twins at 11 weeks. They were actually mo/di.

I found out at my n/s at 11 weeks that it was twins. The MFM saw me the following week (12) and told us mo/di.

I didn't find out I was having twins until 12 weeks. And at that appointment they told me it was mo/di because they are sharing the same placenta, which most likely means they are identical. I guess sometimes two placentas can fuse together so at times it can appear that di/di twins are really mo/di twins, but it is not common for that to happen. There is a membrane separating them (not sure if this is the same thing as two sacs or not), The only way to tell for sure if they are identical or fraternal is a DNA test.

I got my official release from my RE today (except for monitoring blood hormone levels / weaning me off their meds) and they said they're di-di. Oops!

We knew they were either mo-mo or mo-di at the first appointment at 6w4d. We saw the membrane clearly and knew they were mo-di at 9w.
