Claws at face and head?

When DS is upset, and also does it in bed, he claws at his face and head horribly. He gets these big deep gashes on his head. I am always trimming his nails and started swaddling at night. He was just freaking out and was overtired nd was just screaming and gave himself a huge cut ;( he finally passed out in my arms :( anyone less LO do this?

Re: Claws at face and head?

  • Mine doesn't seem to do it when she's upset so much as she explores her head & sometimes is a little rough - I can't keep her nails short enough either! She also has cradle cap, so I think her head might be a little itchy?

  • Yes - my DS does this as well.  He rolls over now so we had to take him out of the swaddle.  I put socks on his hands at night to keep him from scratching himself.  I am against doing this in the daytime because he needs his hands to explore, but at night - he doesn't need them, so we put the socks on.  We make a game out iof it and we call him "Mr. Sockhands."  He thinks its funny and it works great.

Yeah I didn't want to cover them during day since he sucks his thumb. It's when he cries and is overtired or wakes up too early that he rubs and scratches his head :/

  • same issue with me - I feel so bad and try to keep up with clipping but it gets to hard to keep up

  • Thanks for posting I'm glad to know I'm not alone on this. I just found a scratch on her face yesterday and it broke my heart. DD's nails grow like crazy and I can only file them at night and when she's asleep and doesn't know what I'm doing. It might sound silly but I'm afraid she'll choke herself if I use the mittens at night. I used to use them all the time but now that she shoves her hands in her mouth for comfort  I'm afraid the mittens will choke her. I know probably unlikely I need to stop being so paranoid.

most likely she will just pull them off ;) I used to try socks on the hands when DD was a baby and scratched her eczema....she always got out of them, never choked ;)

  • Thanks that makes me feel better. I'll see about putting them back on at night I don't want to see any more scratches on her little face.
