March 2013 Moms

In your experience...

I have been on bed rest for about 4 weeks now and had my 35 week check up I go weekly and I am now 70 effaced and a centimeter dilated...my doctor says I can start moving around this weekend and then I'll be stopping the medication that keeps my contractions down next Tuesday when I'm 36 weeks...anyways I left and wished I had asked a few more questions about the 70 effacing...for those who have gone through this before what does it mean when you reach 100? Does that generally mean labor is close behind? My doctor said my little girl coming next week is definitely a possibility, but I'm just curious about what people have experienced once fully effaced.

Re: In your experience...

  • I'm confused about effaced vs. shortened, myself.

I've been measuring super shot since 28 wks and have been on bed rest.

I'm 34 wks now, and am supposed to be removed from bed rest on Thursday when I see the perinatologist again.  My cervix wasn't even measurable last week, which mean's it can't really shorten any more at this point.  I assume that's similar to thinning.

They are also taking me off of Procardia (anti contraction med) at 36 wks.

I was told that I should expect for the baby to be here by 36 wks as my short cervix shouldn't be able to hold him in much longer.

I hope you feel better once you can start moving around. I know my body aches just laying down all the time. I can't wait to, gasp, walk around CVS this weekend and maybe buy a new nail polish! lol

     Good luck. :)

  • Generally, your cervix is long and closed. Effacement is the process by which it shortens, and dilation is the process by which it opens. Both are necessary, neither is sufficient alone for labor. I've heard that FTMs tend to efface more before beginning to dilate, but I don't know how true that is... it wasn't true for me.
