Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Cries Halfway Through Bottle?

Is this normal?  For the past week my LO will start crying 1/2 way through his bottle.  He was taking 6 oz. regularly every 3 hours.  He is FF and has been since birth.  The past week halfway through at about 3 oz. he will pull the bottle out (he's trying to hold it himself)  turn his head away and start to get fussy or cry.  I've tried burping him, changing his position (laying down, sitting up), giving him a small break, up the nipple size. But nothing seems to work.  He'll ususally take a little more about another oz. He spits up more frequently too, up to an hour after eating, no matter if he's laying or sitting up.  I don't know what to do about this.  Is he just full at 4 oz. when he was previously taking 6?  i don't know what the issue is...Any advice would be helpful. TIA ladies!

Re: Cries Halfway Through Bottle?

  • How old is your LO? Might just be full. I know my LO will fuss if I ate something that doesn't agree with her tummy.

  • DS was doing that too when he was about three months old. We talked to the pedi about it and he said to just try making smaller bottles and see if he is getting full from it. When that didn't work, he had us try a new type of formula and it turned out his stomach just wasn't agreeing with the original formula. He has had no trouble since.

  • We had a few issues when he first came home.  Lots of gas and pains.  He was on Enfamil so we switched over to Similac and he got a little better.  The pedi had a go to Similac Sensitive and have been good until now.  I guess my worry is if he is getting full.  He was consistently consuming 6 oz. (sometimes more).  He's always been a good eater and I'm a FTM.  Guess I'll try the smaller bottles.  He'll let me know if he wants more.

  • My LO is doing the same thing. I don't have any advice for you; I'm worrying about the same thing.
  • It's good to know I'm not alone.  If you find out anything please post it and I'll do the same.  Good luck

  • I am having the exact same problem, and our LO's are about the same age. Hopefully someone has an answer!

  • We went through the same with our DS. Pedi told us to come in & have his ears checked, that is a sign of an ear infection because the sucking hurts. Once you rule that out & also make sure the bottle isn't too warm for LO (pedi said that a common mistake made), then change from podwer to liquid if using podwer. Then switch formula if necessary. Is the spit up curdled?

     *Sorry about previous empty post*

The spit up is sometimes curdled about 50/50.  Sometimes it looks just like it went in.  I'll call the pedi and see if I can get him in this week.

  • We had to switch DS to Alimentum at around 4 months. He had the same problem with crying while he was eating, spitting up curdled spit up, & also freaking out about a half hour-45 mins after eating. That was when he was digesting the food & it was causing gas.

Are you using powdered formula? That is what was causing him to cry while eating after we switched. The store we shop at was out of the ready made formula & it was late so all the other stores were closed. We bought a container of powdered formula but when I made DS his bottles, he would cry & push it away the entire feeding. He wouldn't even eat it unless he was starving & even then he'd fight me the whole time. The pedi said powdered formula tastes a lot different, isn't as filling as ready made, & tend to cause gas from the air you get in the bott;e when shaking it up to mix it. SOOooooo, the rest of the $30 container of powder will be going in the garbage Sad

  • Thanks so much for the advice.  I have been using the powdered formula but have a bottle of ready made.  I'll keep a close eye on him and see how it goes. I just didn't understand what would cause this 'all of a sudden'.  He's growing so fast and changing from day to day.  It just seems odd that he'd be fine and then suddenly have problems.  We had switched his formula early on due to gas and extended his time between feedings to keep him from getting fussy in the later part of the day from his tummy constantly digesting food.  He was wanting to snack every hour. Thanks again as these are they things they don't tell you when your getting ready to have a child.

this has just started with us. Turning away halfway through the bottle and crying. I think it's from teething.  Like he wants to gnaw on the nipple and is mad formula is coming out. I switch him to a paci or Sophie teether, and then back to the bottle in a little bit (before the bottle expires).
