How are schools separated by grades (in your area)

What grades are common in middle schools in your area? The town I grew up in had a junior high as opposed to a middle school which was 7th & 8th grades. Elementary was split between 1-3 and then 4-6 in separate schools. High school 9th-12th. It was a smaller district but they are basically still set up the same just have added new schools.

Where we currently live (just a few cities over from where I grew up) is a large district where elementary is 1st-5th and middle school is 6th-8th and high school is 9th-12th.

The reason I ask is because my SKs just moved to a new district right before Christmas. It's right next to our and is a huge district with lots of high schools, middle schools, ect. SD goes to the newest middle school and it is set up differently from the rest of the middle schools in the district. The other schools are set up the way our district is but this one middle school has 5th-8th.

What this means is that next year my SS who is very immature for his age, very short (not that my DD doesn't deal with this but she's a girl), and is the type of kid that will most likely get bullied. It scares me to death that because they moved he will go into a middle school environment a year earlier.

So I was just wondering what the norms are in your area and if this seems strange to you all. There is a difference between a 9/10 year old and a 13/14 year old.

This is how it is where we live and how it was when I was growing up as well. Until SK's started school I never thought anything about it. Where BM lives, which is only two hours away, kids go to one Elementary School from K-2 and another one from 3-6.

  • Ours used to be k-4th (in 2 different schools), 5th-8th and 9th-12th. They reorganized a few years ago and now it's k-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-8th and 9th-12th. I was not pleased, but it seems to work quite well.

They do keep the older and younger kids separate for the most part, 2 different lunch periods, different recess, different hallways, etc. Here we have two separate wings in the middle school, one is 4-6 and the other is 7-8. In fact, last year my youngest was in the 8th grade and had two cousins in 4th and didn't see them all year except walking home. This is in a school of about 500-600 kids.

  • I went to private school, so it was a little different.

Lower and middle school are in the same building,  Depending on he size of the school, some had different wings.  Kingergarten was uaually sperate from 1-5 K-5 for lower and 6-8 for middle.  Junior High was a term that was never used.  I also went to montessori, which was in the same wing as the lower school and still is at that school.  That's a very small school, student body wise, which is montessori thru 12th grade with 3 wings

    High school was 9-12.

My sister went to public school and it was K-6 for elementary and  7-8 for Junior High, 9-12 for High School/

  • Our town's public school has pre-K - 8th grade all in one school.

  • When I grew up my district was k6, 78, 912. Dd goes to school in the same district and it's now k4, 56, 78, 912.
    The district I teach in is: k2, 35, 68, 912.
I know many districts that have younger kids in the middle school such as 58 or 68 don't mix the younger and older students. They are in separate wings, floors etc.

  • I'm in Canada but it sounds like our schools aren't divided that differently. It also varies from district to district.

When I lived in one province, the schools in my district went K-4, 5-8, and 9-12. In my teens I moved to another province where our district went from K-7, 8-10, and 11-12.

I have been teaching for the last 8 years (with a short hiatus in between) in three different provinces. The division of grades in school has varied in every division I've taught in.

I currently teach grade 6 in a school that goes from 5-12. The 5s & 6s are in a somewhat separate wing from everyone else, the 7s are in a different direction, 8s are in between the lower and higher grades, and the 9-12 are in another separate wing. The 5s to 8s do see each other during recess and lunch but they do not interact with one another that much. They rarely see the older students.

I agree there is a difference between a 9/10 year old and a 13/14 year old. However, at my school, I don't see them interacting much and it isn't a problem. I wouldn't be too concerned about your SS though, as long as he hangs out with kids his own age and doesn't draw attention to himself. In no way do I think bullying is acceptable...but I have found that the younger students at my school do get picked on if they bring it on themselves. The smaller, younger children do not get picked on if they are quiet. But the ones who are mouthy, sarcastic, and try to act like the "bigger kids", often find themselves in trouble. It's not acceptable for the older kids to bully the younger kids. We have a zero tolerance policy toward bullying at our school. But that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. My own SS is in grade 6. His homeroom is across the hall from my own classroom and I observed several occasions where he and his peers have gotten themselves into trouble with the older kids because they have big mouths and not much respect for their "elders". This is something DH and I dealt with a lot after SS started living with us last summer.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I think your SS should be okay if he sticks to kids his own age etc (not saying there won't be bullies even in his own grade). I know kids can get bullied even if they don't provoke it. But often there is a reason for it.

  • I'm going to answer with a little more specifics of the areas that I know about.

We are in HEB ISD and it is Elem is PreK-6th, Junior High is 7th-9th and High School is 10th-12th.

Keller is Elem K-4, Intermediate school is 5-6, Middle school is 7-8 and High School is 9-12.

Birdville is Elem K-5, Middle is 6-8 and High School is 9-12.

I haven't heard of a middle school in the area that is 5th-8th.  That seems like a weird grouping to me.  There are a lot of changes between 5th and 8th.  That is why I liked Keller having the separate school for 5th and 6th.  We changed classes but we did it as a class to get us ready for middle school.  It was a nice transition.

  • In our district it's k-1 in one building, 2-3 in another, 4-5 in a third, 6-8 in a "middle school" and then 9-12 in the high school.  I hate it.  They bus the kids all over the place and it's nuts.  Plus the high school and the 4-5 grade building are on the same campus.  Recently a high school boy was smoking in the bathroom in my SDs school and set the building on fire.  God help him if I ever find out who he is.

  • Ours is K5, 68, 912. Growing up middle school was 78 but they added 6th when we went to middle school because of elementary school crowding.

I would not worry about him being bullied by the older kids, his classes will likely only be with 5th graders so the only time to worry is on the bus but he should be sitting up front and not near the older kids anyway. In high school it is different because many classes are mixed ages including gym and lunch but middle school is usually very protected.
