Success after IF

Anyone solve the why are they waking up early problem?

My girls are 16 mos and pretty good sleepers.  They go down around 7 p.m. at night and take a 2ish hour nap around noon to 2.  Normally I'd say they wake up between 6:30 and 7 but we are on week two of waking up between 5 and 6.  I do let them cry for 10 or 15 min but it just gets worse.  I was having problems with them waking up wet but we solved that with less milk and a nighttime diaper.  There's nothing wrong with them when they wake up - they just want to play.

  • DS sleeps a pretty consistent 12 hours at night no matter when we put him down.  So If he goes to bed at 10p on a weekend night he will sleep until 10a.  During the week he will sleep from 8p to 8a.  Can you try to move their bedtime up an hour?

  • DS used to do the same thing. Interestingly enough, he started waking up earlier (5:30) when he started to sleep more consistently throughthe night. It was almost as if he was better rested earlier because his nighttime sleep was solid. For us it was just a matter of waiting the trend out. We didn't go to him right away in the morning as long as he was happy. At the beginning he would cry but now when he wakes up he just chatters away in his crib until we are ready to get him. Sometimes he doses off to sleep again. Sometimes he doesn't. But at least we don't have to get up so early! When we were going through it I repeat a few of our sleep books, and none of the experts had any good advice about what to do. They all seemed to say that this was the toughest problem to fix. Now he usually sleeps from 7:30-6:00 or 6:30. GL!

  • DS is 18 months and sleeps from 10 to 12 hrs a night. I usually put him to sleep at 9 and wakes at 8ish. I would try putting them down later if you want them to sleep later. But if you enjoy having them sleep earlier then I would just stick it out.

  • I agree with pp's.  Maybe try putting them to bed an hour later.  Otherwise just wait it out.  My DD went through the same thing and then just kinda got over it.

  • I don't find that on the rare occasion they stay up later it makes them sleep later but I may try pushing bed time back incrementally.  They seem tired about an hour after they wake up - they are rubbing their eyes and fussy and its hard to keep them up until noon.

This is where we struggled too. People told us to just put m down later, but a lot of sleep books actually say that this will either have no effect or have the opposite effect. In HSHHC he actually recommends putting LO to sleep earlier. This was not an option for us due to dh's work schedule.

  • Lurking (I am a former IVF/PAIF'er but have never formally introduced myself over here. My DD goes through phases where she wakes up at least an hour early, around 6:00. It usually lasts a couple of weeks, then she goes back to sleeping in till 7-7:30. Hopefully this is just a phase for you. Good luck!

  • I dont know the answer. I put my DS down at 7 every night and he wakes up all different times in the morning. Sometimes he wakes at 7 other times it is 6 or 8 or 9. Lol. When you figure it out let me know.

  • Well they slept until 6:45 this morning but Audrey woke up and screamed from midnight on and off until 1 a.m.  I wonder if this is teeth.
