Milestones - 12 weeks and not pushing up much during tummy time

I try not to focus too much on milestones, but was wondering if others with babies around the same age had noticed this. DS will hold his head up and props up on his arms with them bent, but he doesn't push onto his hands or straightened arms at all. I'm thinking he just needs more time and more tummy time. I wasn't that consistent with it when I was at home with him. Daycare focuses on it now and we are at home too.

Re: Milestones - 12 weeks and not pushing up much during tummy time

  • Benjamin is going to be 12 weeks on Wednesday. His situation is a little different. He was great at tummy time, held his head up, and even rolled over to his back. Now, he doesn't roll, hates it, screams, and barely lifts his head. Instead, he's laying there and sucking on his fists. I always try to do it after he's eaten but nothing is working. I have a little more success with the BOPPI. But I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep at it.

  • DS never straightens his arms and pushes up onto his hands during tummy time. He will hold his head up with his elbows bent, but that's about it. He hasn't shown any interest in rolling over. He does have excellent head control and can sit up (assisted) without flopping his head all around. I haven't been too worried about it. He'll get it when he gets it. Plus, I don't want him to start rolling over anytime soon, as swaddling is working really well for us.

  • My DD doesn't really care for tummy time. Really hated it in the beginning. She's really good about holding her head up and spreading arms & legs out like an airplane. It looks like she's trying to roll over. Half her body is sideways like a diagonal (both when on her back & tummy). She doesn't like tummy time, so she cries when her body is half way from rolling over.

Anyone else's kid hate tummy time? It seems like most of the kids I know hate it.

  • I know it's hard but don't worry too much but just keep trying when you can. Both if my kids hated tummy time. DS1 didn't roll til 5 months, didn't crawl til 1 year! And didn't walk til 14 months. He could cruise starting around 9 months though. He is now an awesome totally developed 2 1/2 year old.

DS2 is a little younger than yours but just started propping up on elbows. He isn't even that great at lifting his head off the floor because he hates tummy time so much. He definitely isn't rolling.

    Same here!

She loves sitting up and looking around so I just tell myself that she's using her neck muscles...

  • Mine isn't thrilled about tummy time, she's done with it pretty quickly. I'm not worried about it, to each their own.
  • My LO dislike tummy time on the mat as well.  She screams bloody murder after 30 sec of trying.  Though she does it on our chest and loves to sit up on her own. Hopefully, she will enjoy tummy time when she gets a little older.
