C-sections

How long does your hospital keep you after a CS?

Hello ladies! When I had DD by emergency C-section 4 years ago, they only kept me 48 hours. I was seriously ready to get home. When my Mom had me 26 years ago almost, she was in for a week and when she found out they were dismissing me, she went and talked to the charge nurse because she thought I should be in longer. They told her that since all my vitals were fine, no fever, the baby was doing good, they were sending me home.  I have seen a lot of changes in those 4 years with everything baby related so I am just wondering how long you ladies have been in the hospital following your C-section?

Re: How long does your hospital keep you after a CS?

  • I had an emergency c/s on a Monday morning and went home Thursday afternoon. So I was there 3 nights. That amount of time was perfect for me. I was not moving around Monday or Tuesday at all, but by Wednesday I was wanting to take walks in the hall just to see some diffrent scenery or get a kool-aid slushy :)

  • I guess it all depends on your doctor and how well your surgery went. My first c-section they released me on the 5th day late in the afternoon. My second c-section was planned and went really well so they released me on the 4th day in the morning. Although, I asked to go home too....the nurse told me that she would ask the doctor and if everything looked ok they would let me go home. Which makes me think they we're going to keep me for 5 days. So I guess everyone/every surgery is different. Good luck! :)
  • I went in on Friday night, delivered via c-section Saturday AM at  5. I was discharged Tuesday afternoon, so I was there post surgery 3 nights.

  • 5 nights with DD1, but that was partly because they were still monitoring me because of the HELLP and partly because I was in no hurry to go home because DD1 was in the NICU.

4 nights with DD2, although they gave me the option of going home after 3. My MW advised against it, though, saying I would do more at home than in the hospital and should give myself an extra day to get BFing help and stay off my feet.

  • Was induced on a Sunday night, labored for 24 hours before csection on Monday night, then left Friday afternoon. Almost had to stay longer because DS was still badly jaundiced, but I wouldn't have been staying as the patient.

Back in those days, they kept you longer, you can call it our health care system/insurance running the medical industry, or advancement in medicine. My mom was kept in hospital for 5 days for vaginal delivery. Still in many countries they keep you a full week for the CS.

  • I stayed 5 nights but only becuase of complications due to my HELLPS syndrome. If all had gone well it would have only been 2 nights.

general rule is 96 hours for a non complicated csection. I went home a day early with DD1, I begged the dr and said if he didnt release me I would release myself. Big mistake. WIth DD2 they had to basically kick me out, which is what they are going to have to do again. It is nice to have that extra help and have someone else keep the baby at night until its time to feed. You dont have to do much of anything while your in the hospital. I never even changed a diaper in the hospital. I let other people do it.

    wow.... that's disgusting.

'let' other people do it..... Awesome mom!!

  • I had my c-section on a Monday afternoon and they were supposed to keep me until Friday, but they let me go on Thursday because I was recovering well, it was beautiful outside, and it was my birthday. :)

  • I ended up being there for 5 nights. I would have been sent home after 3, but my blood pressure spiked, and they kept me for observation until it regulated.

  • I had a C-Section Tuesday morning and left Friday afternoon. That doesn't count the two days I spent getting induced.

  • I went in for an induction Saturday morning, had the c/s at 6:30 that night, and was home by 4:00 on Monday. I was told I could stay one more day, but I was done with being in the hospital!

  • By law medical insurance has to allow three or four nights post-surgery, so most hospitals do that.  Remember, it also gives the pediatrician an extra day to monitor the baby.

With DD#1, I stayed 4.  I had pre-e, and had been through a lot, and DD was a little jaundiced.  Everyone felt better with the extra day, and I had no one at home waiting for me, so was happy to stay.  With DD#2 they thought I'd want the fourth night given the pain I had been in (tougher recovery -- I had a lot of scar tissue), but I was anxious to get home to my other daughter and asked to go home after the three nights and they let me.

With this one, I am planning on the three nights, but know I need to be prepared for four in case baby or I need it.

  • I'm so impressed with everyone's memories! It's all a blur to me! I think we were there for 4 days maybe???
  • They kept me exactly 48 hours. But I had absolutely 0 complications.

  • 2 nights. I was bored to tears in there. LO was in the nursery almost the whole time under the lights for jaundice. I think they would have let us go sooner if it wasn't for that. I was dying to go home.
  • I had my little one overseas and I went in one a Thursday night, had him on Friday morning. They said I had to stay until Wednesday but I BEGGED them to let me go on Tuesday. I was released late afternoon on Tuesday. Even though I was in a lot of pain still I couldn't stand being in a hospital for any longer.
  • With my last 2 C/S I was in 2 nights and 3 days.  Any longer and I'd go crazy.  I was up and moving about 4hrs post surgery.  The nurses told me the sooner your up and out of bed the sooner you'll be able to go home, so I'm up as soon as I can feel my legs again:-)
