Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Home made vs. store bought

So on several occasions I've made my LO homemade purees -- he hates them!

I want him to eat, so I end up giving him store bought baby food (mostly Gerber). I know its not terrible, but I want him to like home made food. =/

Does anyone have seasoning tips? I still have no idea what I'm doing!

Re: Home made vs. store bought

  • what are you making?  I've never had a problem with fruits and veggies.  I used to try to puree meat and mix with with the veggies when DD was a baby, but it was gross and dry and she didn't like it.  I've pureed pea soup and chicken soup for DS and he enjoys that.  He's 8 months and for the past month or two I've tried to give him as many finger foods as possible.  It's easier for him to eat with us that way.

  • How are you making them?

I've made a couple of things, and I cook the veggies in a pot with water, and then use a blender to puree the veggies and use some of the water that they were cooked in, adding water as needed to get the right consistency (the blender gives a better consistency than a food processor).

Then if it is something like peas I pass them through a mess strainer with a spatula. The consistency is pretty close to store bought baby food.

Then I put them in ice cube trays and freeze them into individual servings.

As far as seasoning goes, you can pretty much use any spices you have (keeping in mind to avoid the spicy ones, and the ones that have salt). Babies from other countries (Mexico and India) get spices in their food. i also heard that by adding a variety of spices to LOs food will help with them not being picky eaters later. As for fruit ground cinnamon or nutmeg is always a good option. I add the cinnamon to DS's oatmeal and he likes it so much more than the plain stuff.

  • LO likes baked, not boiled/ steamed veggies. Also, I add seasonings (stage 2 baby foods do, so I do too).

She gets both home made and store bought, but tends to prefer home made.

  • I've tasted jarred and fresh and to me the big difference is the jarred is much blander.  Try thickening your purees with oatmeal/baby cereal, particularly if LO likes that.  Or add some breastmilk or formula (whichever LO eats) so that the taste is more familiar.

    Good luck!

ETA: Remember, food before one is just for fun, so don't stress if LO isn't eating much :)

  • My LO is pretty picky but he still eats all the purees I make at home.  I still make all his breakfast and lunch meals- fruits for breakfast (pears, apples, bananas, or peaches) I puree them and then mix with rice cereal- for lunch I make him usually veggies like squash, zuchinni, peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli.  For dinner now I have been giving him jarred "meals".  I like the Earths Best brand, its all organic no preservatives and he loves the combos like sweet potato & chicken dinner.

  • oh and I definitely do not use spices/seasoning.

  • I just started the past month with seasonings, cinnamon, garlic, pepper. I mix the cubes together sometimes, a fruit with a veggie (sometimes the veggie is thick and the fruit is runny so it evens out) I thicken with baby cereal, or small chunks of chicken. I am just sarting to do small chunks of boiled food for DS as well.

I went to wholesomebabyfood.com  and got a lot of information. Also I just offer DS some of what we are eating or I will puree some leftovers for him.

  • I sprinkle some cinnamon on carrots and squash while baking.  I thicken with breastmilk.
