PR: DS and swearing

I am at my witts end..H said 'bullsh!t' last week and now DS keeps saying it over and over. I've tried time out's and he says it while he's in time out. I've told him in a firm voice that we don't say that word because it's not nice and he starts crying hysterically and then immediately keeps repeating it. I don't know what to do so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: PR: DS and swearing

  • Honestly, I wouldn't make a big deal out of DS saying it.  Remind your DH not to swear around him (even make it a game with a swear jar, if you need to.)

Kids are going to pick up swear words if they hear them.  Punishing the kid isn't going to make things better.

Alternatively, tell him instead of "bullshiit" we say "drat!"

  • So what should I do when he keeps repeating it over and over? I feel like I shouldn't ignore that he's saying it, but obviously nothing else is working.

This same thing happened with DD1 and the "F" word.nbsp; What's been working for us, is finding a similar word to replace it with, so we told her "no, it's funny"...instead of the other word.
So far it's been working.nbsp; Other than that we tried not to give it attention when she said it and that also helped.nbsp; Kids like attention, good or bad, so we thought if we didn't acknowledge it she might stop and it seemed to help as well.
DS was saying s.hit so I would tell him 'yes we do sit on the couch!' and it quickly stopped but now he tells me he sits on the couch a lot.
  • Get it on video and *discreetly* slip the video into his wedding photo montage when he gets married.  That'll be funny.

Seriously, tho.  Just ignore it.  If he says it, don't make a big deal out of it and focus on using a different, less swear-y word.

  •  I will def. replace the word and not give him the attention when he does say it.

    Thanks for the help!!

  • My DS yelled "Sh!t!" In a store the other day. She's only 19 months!! I laughed it off, and now I know she's becoming a copycat. We stopped saying it and didn't give her a reaction, so she has moved on. I'm sure it'll pass. :
  • Sorry, DS is still in my tummy, lol! DD yelled the swear word!
  • Team ignore. You can try to tell him to replace it with a different word too but I probably wouldn't even bother. Time outs and talking about it are just bringing more attention to the word.

DS said flucker like 6 times in a row the other day. I have no idea why  or where it came from, but I ignored it and he hasn't said it again.
