My best friend just had a preemie

Hi all,

 My best friend just had her 2nd preemie at 28 weeks (first son was born at 32 weeks) and I wanted to ask your advice on the best way to support her through this. I went through everything with her with her first son, but was not 8 states away from her at the time.  I know she is going to have a long rollercoaster ahead of her.  My question....if you were to want a care package what would you like? I am thinking of sending gift cards since they will probably be eating out with traveling back and forth to NICU, a beautiful poem I read about preemie moms (made me cry), and probably a personalized baby blanket.  I was thinking of maybe preemie clothes but doubt he will be able to wear clothes for a few weeks. She also  has quite a few from her first DS. Let me know of other ideas or any other ways I can support her during this tough time.

    Preemie clothes aren't always as useful until the baby goes home because they start off in an isolette and are often naked.

    Personally, we would have loved gift cards: gas cards, restaurant cards and if possible gift cards to the hospital cafeteria.

    Something to do when sitting by the bed can be nice, like puzzle books.

    All of those are great suggestions. I am not sure if this is something your friend would enjoy but I know there are photographers that will do NICU photos. Maybe you can set something like that up for her. I have been looking back on all our NICU pictures lately since dd is almost a year and cherish those. They capture the tears, fears, and joy of the NICU roller coaster and show how far dd has come. I know I was upset I missed the maternity session I had scheduled and the typical newborn photos as well. Since this is her second preemie maybe they can even get some family shots with the new LO. Just an idea, it's something she would probably never think of but that she can have forever. Good luck to your friend!

    Thank you for all of your suggestions.  Her first DS is 2 years old.  She is not a SAHM, and her parents live by which are a huge helping watching him as well as his daycare.  I really like the idea of a voucher for parking.  I think I am going to call the hospital she is at to see if I can prepay and also restaurants near the hospital.

     I like the idea of a photographer as well, but I am not sure what she would think of it.  Right now she doesnt want any pictures up of DS on facebook until he gets bigger she said.  So, I am going to wait and see how she is.  Also, she had a csection and is in a lot of pain. Any one in the same boat know of any products that would be helpful?

    You have wonderful ideas and I want to commend you on being such a terrific friend. Personally when I was in the NICU for 3 months, my "friends" that lived minutes away never did so much as call. Be proud of yourself for being such a great friend! I wish your bestie the best of luck!

    Resturant gift cards are amazing. Also, my parents had a a cleaning service come over and clean my house one day while we were at the hospital. They told me a head of time so I could pick up a couple things.. but when I got home that night from the hospital to a clean house after all the chaos, it was wonderful :)
