Bathtub questions

Hi all!  I've read many mixed things on whether to use a sling in a tub for a newborn.  I like the Whale of a Tub, since the insert is removable.  But I wonder if I should get the First Year's tub with the sling since the babies will most likely be smaller at first.

If you didn't use a sling, did you just sponge bath until their cords fell out and then submerge in a reclined tub?  Or do you recommend using a sling for a couple of months?

Here are the two I am trying to decide on.  Thanks so much!

Re: Bathtub questions

  • Before the cord stubs fell off, we just held them in a warm towel and unwrapped each body part as we washed it. After that, we used the First Years tub. We used the sling until four months and had no issues. It was very easy to bathe them with the sling and as long as we kept a warm washcloth over their bellies, they didn't mind the water. We recently stopped using the sling because Baby A is trying to roll from back to belly like it is his job and it was getting dangerous to have him on his back like that.  It was very easy to unsnap the sling, so no worries there. They have plenty of head control and can sit unassisted for a minute or two, so they don't really slide around in the tub (without the sling that is).

  • When we first brought them home we only used wash clothes.  Once the cords came off we used the whale tub.  DS2 was about 6 lbs when we started using it on him.

  • When DD was born, we did sponge baths until the cord fell off, then used this until she outgrew it. After that she was sitting up so we put her in the regular tub.
  • With dd we used a tub similar to the first years tub and the sling was really helpful.  We used it before her cord fell off, we just made sure we didn't fill the tub high enough to completely submerge her.  Once she was big enough, we removed the sling and used the tub until she could sit up.

  • We used the large Summer Infant sponge on the counter with them wrapped in a towel, only uncovering each part as we bathed with a washcloth until their cords fell off.

We are now using the FP hippo reclined tub in the actual bath tub.

It has worked pretty well for us thus far.

This is exactly what we did with DD. DH and I had no experience bathing a newborn and this made it really easy, even before her chord fell off.

  • Hi,

We have the fisrt years tub with a sling. We used it with my older DD and with the twins as well.I think we used the sling for at least 2 months and then we just put them in the baby bath itself.

  • We just did sponge baths until their cord fell off (it was only a couple of weeks).  We then used the Primo Eurobath tub for pretty much the first year.  It's an awesome tub and we could even put both DDs in there together if there was two of us.

  • I used a summer infant mesh bath chair thingee in my kitchen sink for probably the first 2 months or so. Then I got the eurotub, which was great once they could sit on their own b/c you could actually have them both in there, one reclining & one sitting on the other side. I should have just gotten that from the start.
  • We did sponge baths until the cords fell off, probably two weeks. After that we used the First Years tub with the sling. We stopped using the sling around 3 months and switched to bath seats around 7 months.
