SPD moms (or heck, anyone with some insight, lol)

My DD is starting to wave with consistency. She will do it pretty much all the time with me/dh/DS and will do it during hello/goodbye circle in swim group to her playmates as well as to her therapists when they walk in/leave. However, I notice a good amount of the time there's a delay in her waving. Sometimes it's just a few seconds; other times she waves goodbye to her therapists after they've already closed the door and left.

Is this a "typical" function of kids with sensory processing difficulties? Is there any way I can work with her on this? I mentioned it in conversation to her OT, but she didn't really offer any insight as to what it was/what I could do to help correct it.

Re: SPD moms (or heck, anyone with some insight, lol)

  • Not sure that I have insight but DD does the exact same thing with waving and has sensory issues (not yet dx with SPD, but SLP seems to think so as well as PT). She will wave at the mention of the word "bye" or "leaving," she does it before sometimes and will do it after someone leaves for a long time while standing at the door - but the actual time that people leave it is delayed wave or not there. I have noticed she also has a 5-10 second delay on answering yes or no questions verbally sometimes.

She also has a pretty intense expressive speech delay as well, I can't remember if your DD has one as well or not. I think it may be a praxis related thing, maybe learning to understand the concept of leaving. IMO definatly related to speech delay, maybe to other non-typical issues. Sorry if that wasn't much help, but wanted to share my experience with it right now.

  • I think it is normal and not related.  DS2 does this too and DS1 is the one with SPD.

  • Both of my kids did this, and DD is seemingly neurotypical. DD didn't start waving "on time" until the last month or two. In fact, she didn't regularly say hello and goodbye on time until recently either, and hi was her second word. She is 2y3m.

  • That's reassuring--one less thing to worry about! Thanks everyone!
