Anyone else still night nursing a lot?

I am okay with not STN but was really hoping that by this point my DS would only be nursing once or twice a night.  He goes to bed at 7pm and is typically up for the first time between 10 and 11 and then every 1.5 to 2.5 hours after that depending on the night.  So he's still nursing 3-5 times a night.  He does really nurse when he's up and goes right back to sleep so he seems hungry.  He can self soothe, I do hear him up ocassionally stir and then work himself back to sleep, and he goes to bed awake after a bottle from DH (I am at work at bedtime).  He's very distracting during the day and he started off his life reverse cycling and we've never been able to fully correct so I'd expect some night feedings.

Anyone else still in this boat? I don't know if I am creating bad habits or feeding a hungry baby and I feel like there is no way to tell for sure.  I'm not ready for any hardcore sleep training, I'm not that tired yet, just a little weary :)

  • This is us exactly, even down to the times. Sometimes DS will go 3 hours after his first night waking, but not usually.

He doesn't nurse well during the day, so I have no intention of changing anything. I figure he'll get his act together at some point. Otherwise, I'll night wean at 18 months if it isn't any better. By then he should be eating plenty during the day and it won't seem so upsetting, I'm hoping, anyway.

    Hang in there!

  • We broke Eli from it by giving bottles during the night and slowly gave him a little less each time until he dropped the feeding.

  • We were in this same position almost excatly until about a month ago.  I finally had enough and my Pedi said the easiest time to sleep train is from 6-9 mos so we decided to start.  We moved her to her bed and gave her more to eat during the day.  She still wakes up at 10 or so and eat a little bit and then goes back down until 5:30 or so.
  • Yup!  DS still nurses 6-8 times a day! DS will sleep from 8pm-2am then wake up to eat and "sometimes" he wakes up again around 5am or 6am but not always.  He has his normal 6 feedings during the day too.  I feed on demand so I don't have a set schedule.  I can tell when DS wants to nurse because he starts trying to pull my shirt down lol Stick out tongue

  • I have a unscientific theory on this I think kids who receive bottles, whether it be formula or breast milk, sleep through the night a lot sooner and it has nothing to do with formula being more filling.  Both my kids were sleeping 12 hours by 5 months at the latest but I work and I know they receive 20 ounces between the hours of 6 am and 5:30 pm plus two nursing sessions before bed.  I know on the weekend DS gets distracted and nurses a lot more than the 4 feedings he has between the time I wake and get home from work.  So my guess is unless LO is totally committed to not getting distracted he or she may not be getting as much per feeding and has to make up those ounces.  Also, my pedi pointed out that after 6 months nighttime routine becomes habit so it could be habit that LO is waking to eat.  One thing you can try is doing bottles of pumped milk during the day if you are nursing so you know the exact ounces and see if that helps.
