Frozen Breastmilk smells/tastes funny...help

I have a 6 month old and I've been exclusively pumping and freezing the extra milk. We've been storing it all in a deep freezer and froze it correctly in Lansinoh bags and then another plastic bag. When we thawed some of the milk yesterday it didn't smell sour but it had a funny smell and taste. We didn't give it to the baby because we thought it may be bad but I later saw online that it's normal and the baby may still drink it. I just don't want him to get sick. Any advice?

  • I don't know a lot about it but I've seen people post about this on the Breastfeeding board and the answer is usually excess lipase in the breast milk.  Try googling that and doing some reading or posting on the Breastfeeding board for some help.

  • This also happened to me.  My DD wasn't taking our defrosted BM and after smelling and tasting it, I don't blame her.  I had a soapy/plastic type smell and tasted just as it smelled...awful.  Even though I followed all the freezing and storage guidelines to a tee, the BM is just inedible.  I did some research and apparently, if you have "an excess of lipase in your milk, it begins to break down the milk fat soon after the milk is expressed. Most babies do not mind a mild change in taste, and the milk is not harmful, but the stronger the taste the more likely that baby will reject it."

I continue to defrost my frozen bags in hopes that one will be usable, but at this point, I just wishful thinking.  It really sucks because I did so much work to build up my freezer stash.

  • I EP as well. My mom uses the frozen BM when she is watching her everyday while we are at work. The BM def smells funny but it isnt bad. LO wasnt sure about it at first but now she takes it no problem.

  • It's probably excess lipase.  You can find instructions on scalding your milk online (although this only works for fresh milk, not the milk that's been frozen).

My LO wanted nothing to do with my frozen milk, but I did have luck mixing it with fresh milk.  Usually 1 oz frozen to 3-4 oz fresh.  So it wasn't a total loss :/

  • I have this issue myself, it's caused by excessive Lipase in the milk. I have to scald milk before I freeze it because DD doesn't like the taste. Some babies do fine and it's not harmful to them but she's fussy that way.

The breastfeeding board has ladies there also experiencing it, they are a great resource. It's not a huge deal, just an added step when you pump. You can basically Google "Lipase in breastmilk" and get tons of info.

  • yep, as pp's have said, it sounds like lipase. My DD takes frozen milk with no problem though, even though it smells a little off to me. Your LO might not be bothered by the taste.
