Amoxicillin Help

Does any one have tips or tricks for getting your baby to take amoxicillin? We're dealing with our first ear infection and 10 days of antibiotics now to treat it. We're done two three doses so far, two by mouth and one in the bottle, neither went well. Would love any advice you may have to get your babies to take antibiotics!

Re: Amoxicillin Help

  • We just finished ours a couple weeks ago. I made a pocket by pulling her cheek a bit with my little finger and used a syringe to slowly squirt in the medicine into the pocket.  I read that method in Dr Sears Baby Book and she was fine with it and all her medicine went down.

  • Is yours flavored?  We didn't have flavor the first time and didn't go well. That time I had to alternate one bite solids, one squirt medicine from syringe. Ever since we've got the flavor and he takes it much better.

Also, I always give mine while he's in the bathtub...he's still in a baby tub so he's got a nice relaxed recline, and is less offensive to him in this position.  He loves the tub, so he's very relaxed and happy.  For the other dose in the a.m., I just make sure he's laying down, otherwise he will sometimes spit it out.

  • This sounds like a great method, but DD bats at my hands so I'm afraid of ramming the syringe/spoon into her gums.  I have to use one hand to block her efforts and then use the other hand to administer the drug.  Maybe I just need to be quicker.

  • We wrapped up LO in a bath towel kind of like how one would wrap up a cat when feeding medication to it. It kept LO's hands contained.
  • We had to deal with this last month. I found that if I could make her laugh, she would open her mouth wide enough for me to stick the syringe in far enough that would force her to swallow the amoxicillin instead of pushing it out with her tongue. I know it sucks though so stick it out! It's for LO's health.

  • My son (7 months) just took amoxicillin for the first time last week and the first few doses were not fun.  Although he didn't dislike the taste he hated the syringe and dropper.  His appetite wasn't great so I didn't want to add it to his bottle in case he didn't finish it.  We measured the medicine using the dropper and then squeezed it onto his spoon.  He loves eating solids and gets excited whenever he sees his spoon.  He'd make a funny face when eating the first spoonful of each dose but we had no problems getting him to take the whole dose from the spoon.  Also, refridgerated amoxicillin is supposed to taste better.  Good luck!
  • We gave our LO her amoxicillin in the jumparoo.  She loves bouncing and it really helped. She got an ear infection from RSV and had a horrible fever so she was getting tylenol, motrin, and amoxicillin and it was that or force it down her throat because she wanted NOTHING to do with taking any meds by the time we were done with all of it.
