My baby was born a few weeks early. He's nearing 6 months now. Doesn't seem "ready" for solids. He's not interested in what I eat. He just began watching me when I am eating. He still has the tongue thrust reflex.
So, I'm thinking about waiting until I think he's ready and not just go by his birthday. Anybody else? What was your experience?
Re: Waiting to start solids after 6 mo?
DD2 is 6 months now, but was also 4 weeks early. We are "starting" solids now, doing baby-led weaning. Meaning, we are putting her in the highchair and putting "sticks" of food on her tray, like toast strips, long crackers, etc. There's no pressure for her, just a fun way to figure out food.
There is no need for solids to fill them up. "Food is fun until one." Until 1 year old, they just need to be exposed to food, not that they need to eat a bunch every day.
I personally would just keep exposing him but not pressuring him.
My DS was 2 weeks late so different situation but we wanted to wait until he seemed ready, grabbing food off plates, trying to put food in his mouth. We are doing BLW as well and he was clearly ready at 5.5 months but not much before that. So it makes sense to me that your LO might need a little more time. Our pedi said to make sure we start my 9 months to avoid texture issues but that was his only concern as BM or Formula is complete nutrition. If I were you I'd wait and not worry about it.
With babies that are very early, I thought I was told by a friend with a preemie (so clearly this is not expert advice) that they could need solids or supplements earlier due to lower nutritient stores. Don't know if that is true or not and I don't think 4 weeks earlier falls into that but I would check with your Pedi on that perhaps.
