Anyone else out there not give their kid the flu shot?

I have a 20 month old(still nursing)

I also have 4 and half year old.

I think my 4 year old had the flu this year.

Why didnt u give flu shot?

Re: anyone else not give kids flu shot?

  • Come to think of it, I don't think Chris has gotten his flu shot this year.  And I'm pretty sure the baby hasn't gotten one either.  Hmmmm, I'm going to need to look into that.

  • Neither of my children got one (nor did I). I didn't give them one because when it comes down to it, I simply didn't feel like it.

  • Everyone but me has had their flu shot.  I just never got around to it, and at this point, they're hard to find in my area.

DS has never ever been sick.  He had a fever once.  I don't want to have to discover that he is king of the man cold if he gets the flu.  Definitely shots for him.

DD is a 21 lb  two year old.  I feel like it's easier for her to get really sick from the flu than a kid that's not underweight, but that is just a random fear of mine.  The last time she had a fever for a week she lost three pounds.  Shots for her as well.

  • I can't imagine not getting the flu shot. I know some parents who did not for their three kids- who are homeschooled- because they fear the chemicals and such that are present in the flu vaccine, and are in general anti-big brother. DS is in contact with 3-4 different classrooms and two seperate schools, including bus rides, every day, so I would never take the risk.
  • I gotta say, we all got our shot and I'm so glad. I got the flu anyway (officially tested positive last Wednesday and have been on Tamiflu since) and even the "mild" case I have had totally wiped me out with exhaustion. The shot helped tamp down the worst of the symptoms and it's still taken me almost a week to feel normal.

DD2 had a high fever for about 36 hours and sneezing/mild cough. DD1 just woke up with a fever this morning and has been very tired; hopefully it will pass as smoothly for her as it did for DD2. I've definitely gotten the worst of it, and DH seems to have avoided it entirely.

I don't doubt we would've ended up at urgent care for one or both of them if we were dealing with the full-on flu without the benefit of their immune systems being prepped from the shot.

I've had plenty of winter colds and so have my kids, and I've never thought twice about it; but experiencing the actual flu even mildly has made me realize what a boon it is to have the shot available.

  • DD attends preschool and I teach.  No way are we NOT getting flu shots.  2 of her classmates were out for a while with the flu...interestingly they were the only 2 in the class who did not get flu shots.
  • We all get flu vaccines here as well.  I've had the a confirmed case of the flu one time. It was a year I had received the flu shot but I must have gotten a strain not included. That case of the flu was thankfully pre-kid because I was in bed for a week and it's the sickest I've ever been.  No thank you.  Plus every time DS gets anything upper respiratory he ends up needing breathing treatments through the nebulizer.  I can't imagine the flu would be kinder in that regard.

  • We all got  shots. To me, it's a no brainer. We find other viruses and bacteria to keep us busy. If there is a way to avoid an illness, we are going to do it.

  • We did this year but I'm considering not doing it next year. With the limited efficacy of the vaccine I'm not sure if the benefits are worth the risks. We all have pretty strong immune systems, my kids aren't in daycare full time, we minimize the risk of exposure, etc. I'll probably do a lot more research before I make a decision next year and obviously I have a long time until I have to decide either way.

  • We did not this year (yet?), but truly only because all three kids have been sick so frequently that we've not been able to schedule them.  I had to cancel vax apptmts twice for M (19 months old) due to URI and/or ear infections.
  • We didnt because we never do. Your immune system doesnt get stronger from a vaccine. Thats a fallacy. DS has never had any vaccines and we travel across the ocean once or twice a year. His immune system is strong and we naturally boost it. He has never had anribiotics either.

  • DH works in a school and I work fulltime in an office. We have both had our flu shots, but ds didn't get one this year. He normally gets one, but we didn't get around to it. Bad parenting on our part, but luckily he hasn't been sick at all this year .
